Best RPG

Winner: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

This year’s winner wasn’t too surprising — a new Elder Scrolls game is always worth getting excited for, bugs and all. The voting wasn’t even all that close.

“Skyrim has been taking up so much of my time that I haven’t even gotten around to playing and finishing other RPG’s.” — hero

“Easy choice which was Skyrim. It is such a great game besides the bugs.” — SnowHawk

“Skyrim is my choice [followed] closely by The Witcher 2 and then DE:HR” — One-Shot

“White Knight Chronicles II. Amazing game.” — Reneid Klein

“Dark Souls obviously.” — Sir Rickard

“Skyrim, duh.” — trf

“As much as i love Skyrim and i really do love that game. Ill choose the late comer Star Wars : The Old Republic” — MMaC

Best Platformer

Winner: Rayman Origins / LittleBigPlanet 2 (tie)

2011 was a fine year if you like jumping on things — Rayman Origins was a welcome kick in the ass, LittleBigPlanet 2 expanded on the original by allowing you to create simple games as well as custom levels, and a new Mario game is always greeted with open arms. However, it was Rayman and LBP2 splitting almost all of the votes.

“Wasn’t a huge fan of what I played of Rayman. I’m going with LittleBigPlanet 2 for the sheer amount of UGC possible with the game.” — trf

“Rayman: Origins is among some of the best. Easily wins that one.” — hero

“It was a toss up of LBP 2 and Rayman; Rayman won it for me.” — SnowHawk

“Rayman Origins forever and ever.” — WonsAuto

“Duh, Rayman Origins. Easily in my top 5 this year.” — Matt

“Rayman Origins probably becauce LBP2 was so long ago. Plus Land of the Livid Dead was pretty hard oldschool so I had alot of fun with that.” — +silent55

“Sonic Generations – a great return for Sonic” — Smurfn

Best Fighting Game

Winner: Mortal Kombat

It was all about quality over quantity for fighting game releases this year, with both Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs. Capcom making welcome returns. However, the community’s choice for top brawler was unanimous, choosing NetherRealm’s MK reboot above them all.

“Mortal Kombat, easily. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this but I ended up really liking it. The game is more user-friendly than the earlier 2D games, but it also has a lot of rewards for those who attempt to learn the game to a higher degree.” — trf

“As much as I love the MvC games, the amount of content put into Mortal Kombat easily makes it the best fighter this year. The gameplay is a perfect mix of the old, simple games while introducing the new, competitive pace that’s found in popular fighters today. And yeah, there’s tons to do and unlock.” — hero

“Mortal Kombat wins it for me. It’s gone back to the basics but with awesome graphics. what’s not to like?” — SnowHawk

Best Action-Adventure Game

Winner: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

There was a lot of tough competition in this genre, but Nathan Drake was able to best The Dark Knight, Assassins, and the 3rd Street Saints on his way to nabbing the award from our users.

“Uncharted 3. It made Batman look like dog poop upon release. There are times in Uncharted 3 where I would just stop and look in awe at my surroundings.” — unicron7

“Uncharted 3″ — trf

“I’ll probably sway to Batman as it’s just more polished, more ‘complete’. SR3 is the best fun I’ve had this year in the genre though.” — Deadpool

“InFamous 2 – a great fun game, with a great storyline” — Smurfn

Best First-Person Shooter

Winner: Battlefield 3

I’m not much of a FPS gamer, but this year is some of the most fun that I’ve ever had with the genre. There were a ton of great experiences to be had in first-person land, but Battlefield 3 topped them all.

“Battlefield 3, hands down. Single player sucked but the online play is at the top of its class.” — hero

“Although I felt BF3 isn’t as good as BFBC2, I still think it is the pick of the bunch” — Smurfn

“Still think Killzone 3 is above the rest in terms of looks/play-ability on consoles. It was a huge leap from KZ2.” — unicron7

“I haven’t played too many but my pick is Bulletstorm. The game had a great sense of humor to it and the Skill Shot system was a really cool innovation.” — trf

“Resistance 3.” — Sir Rickard

“Crysis 2″ — Deadpool

“I guess it’s not really fair that I vote since this is the only FPS game I’ve played this year, but I’ll go for Killzone 3.” — TheFirstAvenger

Fair bit of division this year. I definitely swayed from the ‘norm’ this year too, I played some hidden gems and some really shamefully overlooked titles. It’s a pity the last quarter was so packed with great games.
