Bungie signs with Activision for a decade of multiplatform games

After all the drama at Activision — its Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward disintegrating in front of its eye — it’s surprising to hear that Halo developer Bungie has signed an exclusive publishing deal with the company.

It was today announced that Bungie and Activision had signed an exclusive publishing deal to last for the next ten years. Activision will have worldwide rights to publish games based on “Bungie’s next big action game universe.”

This new intellectual property will be released on “multiple platforms and devices,” suggesting that Bungie has finally left Halo and Xbox exclusivity behind to release a new multiplatform IP on PlayStation consoles. Bungie split from Microsoft in 2007.

“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, president of Bungie. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”

Unlike Infinity Ward’s predicament, Bungie will own its intellectual property and will stay an independent company. We’re certain the studio was very careful to ensure that they wouldn’t be hindered by Activision. Thomas Tippl, chief operating officer of Activision Blizzard commented:

“Bungie is one of the premier studios in our industry and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with their talented team over the next decade. Bungie has developed some of the most compelling and successful games, multiplayer experiences and thriving fan communities, and this alliance underscores our long-standing commitment to foster the industry’s best creative talent.

“Our unprecedented partnership with Bungie will enable us to broaden our pipeline of exciting new games as we continue to strengthen our industry position and pursue long-term growth opportunities.”

Bungie describes its new IP as the “next big thing” that will appear on the platforms of its choosing, which will let the studio bring its stories to an even bigger audience.

  4. Wow, I can’t believe Bungie signed with Activision. Well, at least they still own their property. We know they’re going to make an awesome game, it just sucks that Activision has to benefit from it.

  5. Yup….reach will be my last bunjie game, i refuse to support anything activision

Wow… and now Bungie goes Multiplat? Activision sucks -.-

  7. lol man I know this is big news, but I don’t really care about bungie going mutiplat. Games like halo just don’t interest me. They did a few years back…but now..meh. Cool news tho I guess.

  8. I’m never going to understand the “I won’t buy Activision games EVAR” stance. If a game is good, who the hell cares who publishes it? There are other companies that are guilty of things far worse than Activision’s ever done, yet people still give them their business without thinking twice.

  9. LOL. Well, it has a lot to do with the yearly buisness model Activision has. It just feels like milking (and not in a good way, lol). The stand Bobby Kotick has regarding game developing is really obscure too.

EA Sports does the same thing and I still don’t get how so much people keeps buying FIFA or MADDEN on a yearly basis xD.

  10. No offense to all, but this seems like a match made in heaven. I company that keeps regurgitating titles with little change or originality, with a company that keeps regurgitating titles with little change or originality. I have not liked Halo since Halo. I think they are the most overrated company in gaming. The weapons have not changed. The game has not changed much. You could really have the same experience playing Halo as Halo 2 as Halo 3 so on and so on and so on. The creativity behind Halo was it’s unique weapons and humor. They have not changed it since. Where is the new weapons? How many times can you shoot someone with a needler? Name the big changes in ODST. No Master Chief(although the odst look exactly the same) and different color projectiles. WOW! I was blown away, not. I sold it within two weeks.

  11. its awesome that we get another studio developing for ps3 but please tell me they can do better than halo plz. halo most overrated shizzle i have ever played.
