Codemasters VP: PSP a “b****cking useless waste of space”

The PSP has been having a rough time in the US as of late, lagging behind other video game hardware sales and coming up short on the software side due to piracy. The UMD-less PSPgo hasn’t been having that good a go of it either, with a high price scaring away many a consumer.

Gavin Cheshire, vice president of Codemasters Studios, puts the blame on a negative consumer experience, telling Edge:

“Well, speaking as a person who bought a PSP, the problem was that I always thought, because it was a better screen than iPod’s, that I’d be doing more with it. But it was such a b****cking useless waste of space; just getting stuff on it was ridiculous. That was its downfall.”

Cheshire’s qualifications for making such a comment appears to lie solely with his own experience, since Codemasters has yet to take true advantage of the PSP in its game releases. Cheshire adds in reference to the PSPgo:

“Relatively speaking, we didn’t do too badly on F1 PSP. But regarding the future, I think they’ve got – well… no. PSPgo’s a lovely device, really smart, but our senior VP bought one the day it came out and has a great story, because he ended up on some customer support line just trying to do basic stuff. He had to re-download his software, do an immediate firmware update, and that’s your user experience. Sony just hasn’t got it right. Stuff like that will make people leave it alone.”

Thus the evidence for these disheartening comments against the PSP, which has had a number of promising software releases in the past year, doesn’t hold much water aside from personal opinions. What’s your opinion on the PSP and the PSPgo?

  1. Dunno, I love my PSP lol

Don’t have that many games, just the ‘big’ titles – and I’m probably not as serious about using it for loads of things like some people. For what I use it for, some casual gaming from bed, a plane, car, whatever – its awesome.

  2. Asshole. Been hooked up to Dissidia for 4 months, and I’ve been playing my PSP for 5 years already.

  3. Yeah, my psp is 4 years old and is still rocking. I guess most people on the industry don’t realize that having a gaming system is quite expensive. They all probably have every system that comes out, whereas your average consumer has to make a choice and stick to it (There you go, fanboy problem explained lol).

The psp offers incredible value: music, videos, photos and “console like” games. . ..

  4. first psp is awesome i love some of the games on it and caint wait for more so please
    enough with this bullcrap.

  5. I’m not a fan of the PSP. My dad has one, and I occasionally borrow it to play the big games. So far I’ve only really played God of War: Chains of Olympus, Daxter, and Prince of Persia: Rival Swords. I hated Rival Swords, but the other two games were excellent. I’ll probably whip out the PSP (PSP-2000, I think) to play Peace Walker and possibly Agito XIII.

I just hate the nub and I hate only having one analog. So make the nub easier on the thumbs and add one of those improved nubs to the other end of the controller and I’m sold.

  6. I’ve got a PSP, havn’t played it too much though. Got it for FF7:CC and KH:BBS and stuff.. should probably use it a lot more.

The idea was to watch movies and tv series on it on the way to School (1 hour bus drive), but I have yet to understand how to freakin’ watch even the most common video formats on it, so I’ve just left it gather dust..

  7. lol Codemasters has trouble using a PSP?? remind me not to buy any of their games anymore

  8. It’s emberessing to be seen in public playing the Ds. I rather whip out my psp for some gaming or mostly music and watching videos. My complaints are, it needs more games, a second anolog stick, and an improved battery life included without payign extra for those extended ones. Come on Sony make the PSP2 now!!!!!!!

  9. the PSP is an awesome system….imo its worse point is its lack of a R analog 🙁

but yeah, the PSP really does need some more support going on :\

Naughty Dog, just hurry up and announce Uncharted PSP….you know you want to 😀

  10. Mines older than the hills and has like 2 hours total play time on it, thought I’d use it more but I find it really uncomfortable to play on and the load times are a joke (1001) It doesn’t make a very good mp3 player and video is a pita. Imo an ipod touch would be a better way to spend 200 bucks.

  11. I like the PSP (except for the Go, which can go to hell), but I don’t use it nearly as often as I do my DS. There are simply more games that I enjoy playing on it.

  12. VG charts says the psp is ahead of the ps3, Sounds like it is doing ok to me.

  13. Ps. i agree with WonsAuto The psp has really fallen to the Ds, well actually all consoles have fallen to anything nintendo lol

  14. well i half way agre with him
it CAN be confusing getting stuff on youre psp wia youre pc and the web browser is (unlike the ps3 web browser) usles
but the psp and the pspgo are wonderful and without a dought one the best portable gaming sistems ewer to come out
and you must be a real retard to fink its a waste of space

  15. If he had a modded psp he would be much happier.

  16. wanted to get a psp but for the price and problems suggested above i have not gone the last yard. Always wanted mgs portable ops and peacewalker for psp so thats why i want one

  17. i love my psp but it does need a R stick 2 make games easier lik MGSPW amd im thinkin about buyin a 2nd psp 2 mod tha 1st 1

  18. Since I don’t usually like shooters or fighters anymore, I’ve never missed the R stick. Instead I play mostly platformers, rpgs, and puzzle games on my two PSPs, and they both get plenty of use. My 3000 is mostly much devoted to Little Big Planet PSP, where I’m constantly checking for new levels or working on my own. I tend to run most everything else on my 1001. Can’t imagine anyone having a hard time using one.
