DICE comments on Taliban controversy

With EA’s next shooter in the pipeline preparing to come out later this year in October, the developers of the franchise have come under fire due to the decision to include the Taliban within Medal of Honor. Gamers and the media have criticized the company’s decision to include the terrorist group due to their part in the attacks on the United States in September of 2001.

In the latest issue of PlayStation 3 Magazine, producer Patrick Liu discussed the decision and revealed that he understands the emotional issue that may arise from the inclusion of the group.

“I think it is a fair point. We do stir up some feelings, although it’s not about the war, it’s about the soldiers.

“We can’t get away from what the setting is and who the factions are, but in the end, it’s a game, so we’re not pushing or provoking too hard.”

To be honest, DICE could have gotten away from the setting and the factions by including a fictitious faction to replace the Taliban, however, in terms of accuracy, you have to applaud DICE for taking the risk of going ahead with the project as planned.

Will the addition of the Taliban into Medal of Honor sway your purchase plans for the title?

  1. Oh please. I’t going to be 10 years since that attack next year, don’t you think its about time to let go? I mean, you can only live hurt for so much, but enough is enough. I was frightened with those attacks too, but over is over. Nazis are in videogames, so what if Talibans are too? Sadly, this is the reality we live in, as blind as we make ourselves to be.

I hope they put it in..

  3. I’m sorry, I don’t understand what’s wrong with putting in the Taliban if you’re just going to be fighting them anyway. It’s not like we’re playing as the Taliban and even then, what’s the harm? Is it because it brings back bad memories or bad feelings? In that case, shouldn’t they complain to the government to pull out of Afghanistan already?

  4. I’m sick of stupid controversies like this. It’s the same people who don’t want Six Days in Fallujah to come out (and that looks pretty good).

What American doesn’t want to let off steam by shooting terrorists in the face?

  5. @? These people are hypocrites, and frankly, Neo-Nazis. They want to preserve this idea of a cookie-cutter America where nothing could ever offend anyone. I remember the movie Kick-Ass came under fire because a child was killing people, even though there are ten-year-old mercs in Sierra Leone, and those same people who complained about Kick-Ass didn’t do anything to stop the violence in Africa.

Video games are protected under the first amendment since they are a form of speech/media, and people have no right to chase after DICE for what they did.

  6. People are blind<_<

  7. I hear they want it changed because their 2nd and backup idea for the enemy faction were giant ninja pandas. And I don’t know about you guys, but I would freaking die to play as a panda online.

  8. wasent going to buy it anyway, with the pricing of games today i can only aford to buy the up most quality titles

  9. I dont understand people sometimes. People these days are so easily offended and confused. Its like they have nothing better to do than to defend terrorists in video games.

I’d rather have a realistic setting fighting the Taliban than having the Russians invade 😉

  11. I want to play as the Taliban & blow away some G.I’s just for the fuck who cares we as American fund our own form of terrorism with our tax dollars then get mad when we get pushed back . That self righteous BS I take responsibility for what my country the USA does on a daily & can handle the consequences & repercussion that is life you don’t like it kill yourself and stop waisting oxygen .

  12. Hey it gives me a chance to kill some virtual taliban, so I am all for it.
