Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance serves as an extreme departure from the formula set forth by Kojima studios and Metal Gear games of old, but its still a Metal Gear title. This particular entry is developed by Platinum Games, the psychotic minds behind fast paced action titles such as Bayonetta and the underrated Vanquish. Bayonetta thrived as a very stylish and humorous Devil May Cry clone while Vanquish could remind you of a fully 3D Contra gun fest. I must admit, I wrote Revengeance off entirely when I saw Platinum Games was developing it. Not as an affront to them, but I had no confidence in their typical style of gameplay translating into the Metal Gear world. Even with the impressive cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4, I felt something would be missing when they bring Raiden’s swordplay to consoles.

Time has allowed me to open my mind to the idea and respect the desire for Metal Gear to spread out into other genres (all bets off if they create an Metal Gear cyborg farming game on Facebook though.......but I could imagine a Fatman bomb tower defen....nevermind). I opened up the case with neutral expectations and, for the most part, the title entertains. If you look at it like a new director taking a tried and true brand and testing out a different direction, you’ll get more out of Metal Gear Rising.

Things pick up 4 years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Raiden is employed by the PMC Maverick Enterprises and communicates with them via an advance coded. Keeping the trademark ring tone, the new codec is bit different for cyborg Raiden. His advance technology based body allows the codec to have 3D visuals for whomever he’s speaking with. Its a nice touch to the gaming interface, which doesn’t take up much of the screen.

The visuals are a mixed bag. The swordplay and battles are beautiful to behold and the “slice crap up” element is spot on 90% of the time. Chopping off the left forearms of enemies offers up bonus tech to upgrade Raiden and, at times, enemy figures will move awkwardly. Mostly, though, you’re offered up pretty awesome scenes to slice to your heart’s content. More on that later.

In exchange for being able to slice up a good amount of what’s on screen, it’s no surprise that your surroundings can be a bit bland. The setup is linear so you’ll rarely stop to smell the rendered roses and take in the sights but, if you do, you’ll find pretty basic repeating patterns and the like. The overall level structure changes up often and your blade makes many thing unrecognizable often enough that you won’t care though. Overall, the visuals hold well enough to support the real cream of Platinum Games’ crop: Gameplay.

Things scream across the screen with Revengeance’s gameplay keeping a pretty high pace 90% of the time. You’ll be tempted to button mash initially, but the enemy will make mincemeat out of you quickly. There’s no block button, keeping with the high speed trend, but you can parry enemy attacks with a well timed combination. When you see an attack coming, you point your analog stick in the direction of the enemy or projectile and hit the light attack button. Poor timing will provide a loose block that skims health off Raiden, but a better timed parry will allow you to counter with a high damage attack. Sometimes the parries even start a quick timer event to stack on even more damage.

You have secondary weapons in your arsenal, varying from Rockets to grenades to holographic photos to distract enemies, but the game essentially makes you stop moving completely to access them. There’s no quick way to switch between items in combat and you have to stop your dash in order to access the inventory menu at all.

In addition to your combos and the occasional quick events, you’ll enter “Blade Mode”. When done correctly, Blade Mode slows time and allows Raiden to hack enemy units to bits. You’re rewarded for cutting off certain parts: Left hands of certain enemies offers bonus credits for customizations and cutting down the center usually allows you to grab the spines of enemies to replenish your own energy. The graphics shine in these moments, with each precision strike send parts all over the place. Each chapter of the game features a few boss battles scattered throughout and, thankfully, they retain most of the Metal Gear flair. Each boss fight does a good job of making you use the skills you’ve gained up until that point, even forcing you to utilize Blade Mode more effectively each time.

Though the gameplay takes the cake, there are some opportunities elsewhere in Metal Gear Rising. The story is all but completely uninteresting for the first 75% of the game, but it somehow switches gears toward the end with references to the “War on Terror” and other foreign affairs. It's an intriguing idea, but it's too evident that a light bulb came on too late into the game’s development. Also, outside of mention of the Patriots, there aren’t many references to other mainstays in the Metal Gear series. Ultimately, the story stands as a weak foundation just serving to get you from set piece to set piece and, in turn, you’ll get pretty annoyed with how the plot is presented to you. Multiple times within each level, Raiden will be slowed to a crawl while accessing his Codec and receiving various uninteresting details and mission objectives. There aren’t many side missions either: I only recall being offered one once throughout the main campaign and the VR missions are basically extensive tutorials and trophy challenges.

Overall, it’s a very solid action title and intriguing spin-off from the Metal Gear franchise. Raiden is an awesome lead to have and future titles could further his movement into the spotlight. Even with a few opportunities missed, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance stands well on its own.

Pros

Fast paced, brutal combat

Intense boss fights

Fluid combat and animations

Cons

Useless story

Poor use of secondary weapons

Fairly short

To start this review I would like to first touch on two things: dungeon crawlers are one of my favorite genres and for some reason my cat LOVES this game. Creat Studios is a master of many domains, since its inception it has released a horde of games, planted itself firmly in Sony’s digital marketplace, and tackled genres ranging from wave boarding to mahjong to everything in between. So when I heard they were branching out into dungeon crawlers I was both excited and apprehensive. On one hand as I have said dungeon crawlers have a special place in my cold black heart; on the other, I was worried how it would stand up to the likes of other PSN games in the marketplace that have already garnered my love and my money.

I am happy to say that me (and my cat) were pleasantly surprised. You would never know this was Creat’s first step into the genre; not only are the puzzles perplexing and fun, the combat is interesting, the level design shows marks of experienced developers, and the controls are fluid. I know it sounds like I am in love with this game and many of you might be thinking I should just marry it and just get a room (which don’t get me wrong I might) but as you will see it has flaws just like any other game.

The Legends

The word cliché’ is thrown around a lot (heck even that phrase is cliché) but the story premise for Labyrinth Legends kicks it up a notch to super ultra hyper omega cliché. It's the day of our hero’s wedding and joy is abound…..but wait something is not right (and no it isn’t just the fact he is about to step into the soul sucking evil that is marriage). Out of nowhere a cloud of generic “Hey I am obviously evil” smoke appears and kidnaps the bride. Instead of counting himself lucky and retiring to a gentleman’s club to make it rain, our hero proves he is lame and set off for a quest of love, to reclaim his lost bride.

With that we have our story set up, sure it isn’t going to win a Pulitzer or Nobel Prize for literature but hey this is a dungeon crawler and like a Playboy we didn’t get it for the articles. Once our hero sets off he is met with various ruins and baddies to overcome. If a dungeon can be crawled by Odin our hero will crawl it solving puzzles, slaying bosses, and getting all the sweet sweet items and loot his gruby digital hands can carry.

The game is full of surprising and often just straight bad ass moments; behind trap doors are ghosts and ghouls waiting to take you to secret treasures, moments where you have to shift focus to rescue your character and kickass boss fights where somehow your little sword can slay a huge rock-kraken. These interesting fights and secrets add a lot of fun and replayabilty to levels that otherwise one might just breeze through.

Then of course there is the art and the music. The style is very reminiscent to the Lego games, the characters have round heads, square bodies and single piece hands. This comes across fun and light hearted while allowing some of the bosses and enemies to look rather cool. The music is what I imagine would play in elevators if such a thing existed in the middle ages. It is medieval melodies meets light techno meets jazz, all in all it works rather well and gives the game a lazzi fare atmosphere that encourages exploration and implies no rush (note to developers: the game would be 100000% better if the soundtrack was done by Rush).

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the latest game from Level-5 Studios and a collaborative project with Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese anime studio. Published by Namco Bandai, the game has finally made its way to American and other English speaking audiences, but how did it turn out? Was Ghibli's influence noticeable and was Level-5 able to make the JRPG relevant again? Is it fun to play by today's standards? Suffice it to say that every now and then a console is graced with a game that is timeless and magnificent; Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of those games for the PlayStation 3.

The game starts out with you, Oliver, doing kid stuff: running around on errands for your mom, talking with friends and getting into trouble. Something goes terribly wrong and your mother ends up dying in an accident. As Oliver cries in his room with his stuffed doll Mr. Drippy, his tears bring it to life and you find out that Oliver is the “pure-hearted one” that can save Mr. Drippy’s world and restore balance by defeating the evil Shadar.

What starts out as a generic “chosen one must battle the armies of darkness” tale, turns into much, much more than that over the course of the 40+ hour adventure. Ni no Kuni isn’t just a game about a young boy battling evil in order to save his mom. It’s a game about friendship and kindness; it’s a game about overcoming life’s obstacles; most importantly though, it’s a game with heart (pun intended.)

As you travel across the various landscapes, you’ll come across certain individuals that are overflowing with certain characteristics (kindness, courage, enthusiasm, etc) that you can take pieces of and give to those in need. One of Shadar’s trademarks is to “break the heart” or “steal pieces of the soul” in his victims. He does this by taking away those aspects mentioned before and Oliver is the only one with the power to restore them.

These events and various other quests are sprinkled throughout the game in the main storyline and as extra content. You can even hunt down unique and especially powerful creatures on bounty missions for special rewards. After completing quests, you earn stamps that can be traded in for even more upgrades and rewards. The key facet of this game is the fact that it is absolutely seeping with content. Never while playing did I feel a sense of aimlessness or lack of purpose, which often plagues JRPGs, but instead I always had things to do, people to talk to and places to see.

Speaking of which, the places to see are breathtaking. Studio Ghibli’s influence is noticeable not just from the wonderful animated cutscenes, but from the overall art direction in the game as a whole. Playing this game is literally like playing an anime mixed with a watercolor painting and you will often have to stop and stare to just take in your surroundings. The visuals accompanied by the amazing soundtrack and stellar voice acting put this game at the very top of the pile in terms of production values. Which makes it even more apparent that most of the dialogue in the game is just text with very little actually recorded and voiced, but what is voiced is spectacularly done.

Keep reading on the next page to see the rest of my thoughts...

Since the inception of the original PlayStation way back when, Sony's machines have become synonymous with gaming. Here we unearth all the latest news, rumors and speculation for the inevitable PlayStation 4 or "Orbis." Maybe some of the information below are just rumors and speculation and maybe some of the information below will turn out to be 100% correct - time will tell. However, in the mean time, let's look forward to what the future for Sony could hold!

Hardware

The final details of the hardware is still under speculation, but we can borrow information from some trusted sources and unveil some serious details for Sony's next console. (Courtesy of Kotaku.com and DigitalFoundry.com). The test specs don't guarantee an appearance in the final product, but they can give us an understanding of what to expect, such as:

System memory: 8 GB

Video memory: 2.2 GB

CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 (so, 8x cores)

GPU: AMD R10XX

Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet

Drive: Blu-ray (of course)

HDD: 160GB

Audio output: HDMI Optical, up to 7.1 channels

There are a few things to note: first, ignore the small size of the hard drive. Developers only need enough room to create them, not download and store them like a consumer. The final release will likely have a much bigger HDD. Second, the CPU confirms that Sony intends to go punch-for-punch with Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, which is rumored to have a similar 8-core processor of their own.

Digitalfoundry.com, a software planning and implementation site, also did some great side-by-side footage using hardware from the PS3 and Orbis to compare quality and frame rate. The advantage for Sony is that their exclusive titles like Killzone and Uncharted tout graphic superiority over its competitors, a progression that any Killzone 3 or Uncharted 3 player would note hasn't stopped. So PlayStation still holds the edge over Xbox in that department as far as we can tell right now.

The Controller

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That's Sony's philosophy concerning the PlayStation controller, as it's remained nearly untouched since the first-generation PlayStation hit stores in Japan. The PlayStation controller is one of the most iconic in gaming history, and Sony isn't about to go and mess that up. According to Kotaku, developers have been creating new games using both the Sixaxis and Dualshock 3 controllers. Even better, Sony will finally combine these technologies into one controller when the Orbis launches, something fans were crying for when the original PlayStation 3 controller lacked rumble capability.

The news behind the PlayStation Move motion controller is limited, but it will likely be used in development for the Orbis as well, seeing as Sony invested very heavily in the technology to compete with Nintendo Wii.

Accounts and Online Play

This is where it gets interesting. Sony wants to change the way we log in to games. They're taking the concept of owning your account away from the console and moving it to the individual by using "multi-user simultaneous logins." This will allow multiple users to be logged into the console at the same time by linking accounts to controllers. This could turn out to be pretty awesome for a few reasons.

Let's say you're playing four player co-op and you take down a boss. Instead of just one account getting the trophy, all four users would get credit for the victory. Also, my favorite, is that a gamer could potentially take their own controller to a friend's house and the foreign console would recognize login information. That would avoid the annoying migration process you have to deal with using Xbox.

According to iDigitalTimes.com, Sony might be waiting for Microsoft's Xbox announcement to even give a date for the release of Orbis, but the fact that we already know this much about the new console is promising. So keep your ears to the ground. Let us know your thoughts on all of this information in the comments below and happy gaming!

If any medium should be able to translate well into video games, it's movies. Ripe for action and suspense, the same qualities that make a movie legendary are the ones that make a video game memorable. It's a cliché that movie games haven't faired well and instead of harping on the ugly ones, PSUni wants to celebrate the good.

The games in this list may not find themselves winning numerous awards but they've stood their ground in the fight against inadequacy. Let future movie games take note that there is hope.

5. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996 - N64/PC)

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was a multimedia project from Lucasfilms set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It came in the forms of novels, comic books, trading cards, erotica and a video game. One of the first to arrive on the Nintendo 64, Shadows of the Empire was a single-player action game where players took the role of mercenary Dash Rendar helping Luke Skywalker save Princess Leia( before she became fat) from Prince Xizor. This game was a true joy to play and was among the first movie games that didn't completely suck.

4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2002 - Gamecube/PS2/Xbox)

Not to be confused with the cell shaded animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has you playing as a Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. The game mostly consists of vehicular combat, though you will sometimes play as Anakin Skywalker or Mace Windu: which is pretty much Samuel L. Jackson with a lightsaber . That is about as cool as stuff gets. This is one of the only times in gaming history where a game was better than the movie is was based on, and for that is makes our list.

3. Spiderman 2 (2004 - Mulitplatform)

This game has the unforunate honor of not only being a movie game but a superhero game as well; this combination is about as close as a you can get to selling bags of poop to gamers. Spiderman 2 webslings above the rest though with amazing web mechanics, a great sandbox feel, and Bruce Campbell as the tour guide. I won't say my creepy obsession with Bruce Campbell made this get on the list but I wont say it wasn't.

2. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (2004 - PC/Xbox)

A prequel to the films, the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay finds protagonist Richard Riddick attempting to escape from Butcher Bay maximum security prison. A stealth game at heart, the action is mainly first-person. No HUD and little feedback to the player made this game truly unique. Not to mention that Vin Diesel actually owns the studio that made this game. The actor within the actor within the game movie would make Inception jealous.

1. Goldeneye 007 (1997 - N64)

Based off of the film of the same name, Goldeneye 007 was critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Though there is a compelling single player campaign, the game shines in its multiplayer format. This was the first game to introduce split-screen multiplayer, and thus the first game to invoke massive arguments about screen looking from friends. Goldeneye's simplicity allowed anyone to pick up and play and helped it maintain large and loyal fan base.

Kids are out of school, lots of time is wasted in front of a TV, and Major League Gaming and Evolution both have championships. The latter has been seen as the big leagues of American gaming, but recently there has been talk of a third world-class championship in the summer. Of course I am referencing the Video X Games tournament in St. Maarten.

I was fortunate enough to get an interview with the co-founder of the event "it's ya boy" Rolando Brison. Check it out to hear our discussion on traveling to the Caribbean, events, special guests, "the VXG package," and so on:

Badasses are only as cool as the weapons they wield. In the past 30 years characters have wielded everything from wrenches to dildos, only some of these however can be considered the most badass of the bunch. Here at PSUni we have brought together the cream of the munitions crop for your killing, dispatching, and beat down pleasure.

10. Red Turtle Shells-Mario Kart

The source of elation and despair for many a Mario Kart-er the red turtle shell can either let you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat or take you from 1st to 4th in seconds flat. Whether by itself or in a set of three, this bad boy is best saved for last second passes but is most fun when just wantonly thrown( especially when playing with friends). It may not as flashy as the Starman( ba dum tss) or as precise as the Blue Shell, this heat seeking favorite is one of the most sought after power-ups in gaming.

9. BFG 9000-Doom

The "Big Effin' Gun 9000" is so powerful it is virtually a genre changer. Doom is supposed to be a horror shooter, in which terrifying creatures try there best to destroy you with every passing second. Once the player snags the BGF 9000, the game takes a much different turn; turning into a God Sim. This gun kills EVERYTHING, if something is in your path it becomes slag as soon as the trigger is pulled. To not put this gun on the list would invite hell.

8. Buster Sword- FF7

Walk into any convention where people are cosplaying and you will see this sword in spades even though years have pasted since FF7 graced its polygons to our TV screens. Impossibly huge and wielded as though it weighs only ounces, this sword epitomizes the cliche Japanese anime/gaming take on how weapons should be. This sword was also made even cooler in the movie Advent Rising where it was shown to break into 9 pieces, each of which looked cooler than the last. If you can get your hands on one then do the right thing, put it on display, abstain from the cosplay: you are not Cloud, you are not Zack, but you do own a badass weapon.

7. Fat Man - Fallout 3

In a game about a wasteland ravaged by nuclear weapons, to include even more nukes seem absurd. Then again when the wasteland is full of crabpeople, mutated gaints, butler robots and cyborgs who are we at PSUni to judge. Unlike some games that are content with adding rocket launchers Fallout went a step above and adds the power of nuclear armageddon at your finger tips. If you pick this bad boy up then prepare to become death incarnate....also you might want to aim it as far away as you can, nuclear blasts tend to be bad for the skin.

6. Soul Edge - Soul Calibur Series

When the entire basis of a game series is fighting over the power of a sword it is safe to say it must be pretty kickass. It is enormous and insanely powerful but also fast and EVIL. The last part of that is what makes this sword so cool. When ever there is an evil spirit trapped inside something that corrupts all who dare use its power only one word can be uttered: BADASS. If that is not enough this sword has been wielded by Nightmare and Siegfried, some of the toughest, most powerful fighters in the genre.

Emmy wished on a Mahjong scale and thats what started Mahjong Tales. Around the room the Mahjong flew but Emmy and Max knew what to do. They climbed on the backs of their Mahjong friends, and now the adventure never ends. Mahjong Tales, Mahjongs Tales, its almost time for Mahjong tales. Come along, take my hand, lets all go to mahjong land......wait. What am I doing? Oh yeah reviewing Creat Studios' PSN game Mahjong Tales. What is that you may ask? (probably not), well it is Mahjong you can play on....get this..your PS3. I know, amazing right? If you don't know what Mahjong is, take a quick look at your start menu, go to games and voila! If you don't have a computer then this is awkward and I am not sure how you can read this. Cyber God? Vitural Realty Suit? Cell Phone?

Well since you won't actually waste your time looking it up let me give you the basics: Mahjong Solitaire, is a matching game using Mahjong tiles rather than cards. Tiles can only be matched if they have been exposed by removing all tiles to their immediate left or right. The tiles are all placed face up which allows you to see at least part of them at times, and this actually proves to make the game quite strategical. Now that boring stuff is out of the way, let us move on to the boring stuff: The game.

The meat of the game is broken up into 4 modes: Ancient Tales, Infinity, Motion and Multiplayer. Ancient Tales is the equivalent of a story mode. In this mode you will play through five books and a total of nine chapters in each one, not a bad length for a game of this type. The game play is pretty much the same as normal mahjong besides for one major difference: you only need to match 1 pair of tiles which are buried under the others to advance the story along. This makes the experience less tedious and a bit more tactical. The story itself is interesting at times but what really makes the traditional Chinese stories shine is the beautiful hand drawn traditional art that plays out the story. One does not have to be an art buff or a fan of the style to enjoy the paintings that make up this mode.

Next is the Zen-like Infinity mode which is the simplest but likely the most played. This mode lets you choose what type of tiles you would like, different background wallpapers, and choose from 100 different starting setups. This lets you pick what you want and then trance out to tile matching fun with normal mahjong rules (which I imagine means you have no soul). Also if you can't get enough of mahjong, this mode has an editing feature that lets you create unique beginning setups, because lets face it: 100 is just not enough.

The motion mode is where you might get a little pissed off; it is entertaining but incredibly hard at times. Unlike boring old mahjong where the tiles lay there like they own the place, there are some tiles circling around the play area which can be used to match with the tiles that are locked onto the board. This may sound easy, but you must used these tiles before the sinister dragon eats them and spells the end of your game. This mode also features cool powerups to ward off the dragon and win the day. There are bombs that can destroy clumps of tiles, freeze bombs to slow the moving tiles, and hints that tell you matches you may have missed.

Ahhh what game would be complete without mulitplayer...the answer is a lot of them but I digress. This mode is likely to be the least played as well. Searching for a match online is like searching for a CoD fan with good taste, long story short: no one is playing. Local mulitplayer is the only other option and that is a bit annoying. The game has a serious issue with denial as it is clear the game was never really supposed to be played with a controller. In the local games more time is spent frantically trying to move the cursor to the right tiles than actually competing with you friends, (which I don't believe would ever happen seeing as no one with friends would subject them to hardcore mahjong bouts.)

All and all, as boring as I find mahjong to be, I can't really hate this game. For the fan I am sure that it offers everything they would want. It isn't innovating the industry but hey, it is only mahjong after all. If you want to play an interesting take on a boring game or zone out while listening to Zepplin you could do far worse than this game.

Pros

Beautiful artwork

Everything a fan would love

Got to mark "Make Dragon Tales joke" off my bucket list

Cons

Controls not updated for change of system

Story could be dry at times

It's Mahjong

Final Grade: C+

Video games aren't just for wasting a weekend or looking at digital boobs covered with as few pixels as the raters will allow, they are also a place to find wisdom. Throughout the industry great writers have produced gems that stay with the player long after the power is pushed and the virtual world is extinguished. While to list them all would be a drastic undertaking, here at PlayStation University we feel that any good education must include some of the greats. So class, get ready to take notes on the best of the best quotes to ever grace our screens.

Most Inspirational/Badass

5. "Sometimes everything you know in the world turns out to be a lie. But at the end of the day the lie isn't what matters, it's what you do after you tell it. If you work hard enough, you can make it true."
-Hope (Final Fantasy 13)

4. "The hands of death could not defeat me, the sisters of fate could not hold me and you will not see the end of this day. I WILL have my revenge."
- Kratos (God of War 3)

3. "The healthy human mind doesn't wake up in the morning thinking this is its last day on Earth. But I think that's a luxury. Not a curse. To know you're close to the end is a kind of freedom. Good time to take...inventory. Outgunned. Outnumbered. Out of our minds. On a suicide mission. But the sand and the rocks here, stained with thousands of years of warfare...They will remember us. For this. Because out of all our vast array of nightmares, this is the one we choose for ourselves. We go forward like a breath exhaled from the Earth. With vigor in our hearts and one goal in sight: We. Will. Kill him."
-Price (Modern Warfare 2)

2. "You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate. Human beings can choose the kind of life that they want to live. What's important is that you choose life...and then live..."
-Naomi (Metal Gear Solid)

1. "I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city, as well."
- Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)
