Is this Gran Turismo 5 or real-life? [UPDATE]

Gran Turismo 5 is certainly shaping up to be one hell of a sim racer. Coming to the PlayStation 3 this November, the game’s premium cars approach reality, so we thought we’d give you a quick little test to see if you could tell GT5 from reality.

GT5’s premium cars are a site to behold – even if its standard cars a little less impressive. The game’s graphics make comparing it with reality very hard – we’ve already had a good look at how the game shapes up against real-life. So what do you think of these ones? You can compare the images to shots of GT5 here.

Gran Turismo 5 or real-life? Tell us in the comments section. No prizes, just pride. I’ll let you know in a day or two.

[UPDATE] – Annnd…it’s real. Sorry to get your hopes up, but these are screenshots of the Porsche 911 Hybrid in real-life. The big clue is that it’s a Porsche – as many of you correctly said, this manufacturer will not be in GT5.

So why the Gran Turismo decal on the car? Well, the 991 Hybrid raced in the Nurburgring 24 hours, which was sponsored by GT5. All cars had to sport the logo. So thanks for playing, and well done to those of you who were right!

  1. This is… GT5. Cause it’s written on the windshield.

  2. Real. You can tell by the dents on the grill.

  3. GT5, Way too easy. Angle, Blur, Shadows. GT5 looks good, but not -that- good haha.

  4. lol dragoonx there is confirmed to be no porches in GT5

  5. real porsche isn’t in GT5

  6. Alexander Brau July 6, 2010 @ 16:50

    Real life

  7. Marc-Andre D July 6, 2010 @ 17:03

It’s a picture taken directly from the Top Gear news about the Porsche 911 Hybrid they posted earlier today…

  8. Real life, the grill shows all!

  9. Game. Simple, if this were real life, there’s no way they could get the camera at that angle.

  10. If its GT5 – why is it a Porsche..

    Oh don’t get me excited.

    Photoshop is my bet :p

  11. this is gt5 i know that they said their are no porsche in the game but take a good look at the wheel well its got antialiseing going on on the side but im a graphic person thats what i look for polys that are not playing nice

  12. It looks like GT5.

  13. If you had to think about this for even a second, it just goes to show you how amazing GT5 looks. I’m saying this is a real photo but at first I thought it was GT5 =P

  14. I honestly can’t tell, if I had to choose I’d say it was real.. Just because of what was stated already about the grill dents and also the nicks and chips in the ground effects from track debris / wear and tear.

  15. The Porsche Brand isnt being included in GT5, so this is Real Life

  16. And confirmed – myth busted:

  17. Wow. Just to see all the different responses is already making it mind blowing.

Now no one can say that GT5 is not the best looking game of all time. It seems to be rivaling real life.

  18. Its real, you can tell by the grill and since Porche isn’t in the game. But if it isn’t why is the game being advertised on a car that won’t be in the game?

    *brain explodes*

  19. I’m confident that this is GT5. Just because that top Gear site was used as proof it’s real life…..Top Gear is obviously going to have a bunch of cross promoting. This may be a case of that. That could easily be a bunk story to in a few days say…Hey, look, this game looks so real, that you people bought that it was real life.

Just because it looks like a Porche, doesn’t mean it’s not GT5. For one, GT COULD have struck a deal with Porche for all we know, supposedly there’s still more unknown info to come on GT5 that’s pretty exciting. And secondly. Gran Turismo has their RUS brand (or whatever it’s called), which is just a Porche. They look IDENTICAL, and I don’t see any Porche branding on that front end, which I find suspect.

  20. Oh, nevermind. I missed the Porche branding there. Well, whether this is real life or GT5, either way this means Porche has struck a deal with GT5. I doubt Porche would be advertising GT5 on their car if they weren’t in the game. So in reality, this mundane “Real life or GT5” article hear, seems to be the bearer of big news.

  21. As I know where the picture was taken it is the real car. It is the GT3 hybrid that raced at the Nurburgring 24 hour race which had GT5 Sponsorship. The give away is the grill showing the bugs etc.

  22. Obviously real

  23. TraumaticTighearnan July 7, 2010 @ 03:51

Erm, I think it is the game. I don’t know, there is something about the orange 😛

  24. This picture is obviously real, first of all there are no porsches in the game and in second the car is dirty on the front bumper and grill, there is no way they could have achieved so much perfection in a videogame.

  25. it could be a screenshoot of a game made by pholiphony digital
or it could be a photo of a real car with a gt5 label pasted on the windshield

but realy, its imposible(for me at least) to spoot AA, textures, detail… anything that would give out this picture as an ingame screenshoot
to me it just looks like a realy good foto, from an angel that could either be achived by a 2nd car driving infront of this one, or a game camera angle

    amasing…

  26. Stop saying Porsche isn’t in GT5. God I hate noobs, Porshe wasn’t in previous GT’s, but the 9/11’s and Boxters were there under a different German licensed manufacturer. How can people NOT know this? Haven’t you ever played Gran Turismo before? Some of you must be 12-15.

  27. Photoshop, no matter if its real or GT5… But my guess is GT5 because of the blur, and taking in consideration of the camera angle it seems more likely to be from GT5..

  28. @Jordan

So Porsche isn’t in Gran Turismo, RUF is…

I’ve added a few more images to help you guys out =)

  30. if it is real? where is the driver? ^_^

  31. SHAFTUCANTHANDL July 7, 2010 @ 06:57

Cars shot from the front, or should I say, going towards the camera are GT5, cars shot from the back end, or going away from the camera are real…

  32. Need to say more ?

Comment edited: Don’t spoil it 😉

  33. I say,1,2,4 screen real but 3 GT5.

  34. It’s 100% real that’s all ill say. 😉

  35. I’m not 100% sure if it’s real or Gt5 (leaning towards real), but it’s the 911 Hybrid porsce that ran at the Nurburgring 24 hours a few weeks ago
    here’s some pics:
    http://green.autoblog.com/2010/05/17/porsche-911-hybrid-retires-after-leading-nurburgring-24-for-8-ho/

Why the GT5 decals? that’s simple. GT5 is an official sponsors of the Nurburgring 24 hours (as much as of other races and series, like Super GT) ALL cars racing there has that decal on the windshield 😀

  36. Actually, it’s real. That’s it’s test run, so it’s brand new. That’s what makes it look a little bit “Plasticy” like it was from a game.

  37. I know its real but im hoping its Gt5 as then Porcshe are finally in GT5.

  38. I think that #1 is real and #3 is GT5. 2 and 4 have me stumped though.
And by the way, just because Porsche is not licensed doesn’t mean there will be no Porsches in GT5. RUF (Modified Porsches without the Porsche name) has been in the GT series for a long time now.

Most race teams’ cars are not built up by their OEM company, so they’re not technically Porsches. Like if Ford wasn’t licensed but Carol Shelby built a monster cobra or mustang, that is a Shelby car, not a Ford. Therefore it could be in game.

  39. its all real here are the photos

Edit: Now now, don’t spoil it 🙂

  40. Real because the grass. Or what if this is GTs way of revealing porsche hmmm….

  41. hrmmm its GT5 of course.. look the grass and look very careful on grass.. simple.. that GT5!

  42. OMG ..no its real..

  43. Patrick Steen July 7, 2010 @ 16:43

I’ve now added the answer – well done if you were right (which many of you were) =)

  44. ive had suspition that a porsche would be in gt5
but that was it, all the screenshoots of gt5 so far were so lifelike…
put a real one among them and its imposible too tell a difrence
