Koller: 8-9 year old kids enjoying 3D gaming is a stretch

Yesterday, Nintendo announced the development of a new DS entitled the Nintendo 3Ds. While the name is quite catchy and pretty creative, I still can’t get over the fact that this company just announced the XLi or whatever and they’re already moving onto something else. I understand the term “milking” gets thrown around a lot in this industry, but it’s getting a little ridiculous now from the handheld standpoint and Nintendo. I get that the little device prints money off of store shelves, but do your consumers a favor and at least keep on edition of the product as the main product for at least a year.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, Sony’s John Koller spoke to IGN about his feelings in regards to Nintendo’s recent announcement and they’re exactly what you’d expect. Koller believes that 3D gaming is something best enjoyed from your couch on a console and he feels that eight and nine year old kids won’t have much fun or desire to play 3D games (according to the company’s research).

“I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable,” he said. “Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it’s an interesting move but one I’d like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

All I have to say to this is, has Koller even seen the entertainment box office over the last year and a half? Kids have been eating up 3D movie watching for the last while and the box office millions upon millions prove this. Considering how many parents purchase Nintendo DS products for the younger generation, it should go without saying that kids are going to go crazy over 3D gaming when their favorite titles like Pokemon start jumping off the screen at them — especially if glasses aren’t necessary (no potential to break them or added cost).

I think Sony needs to reassess this aspect and come to a better conclusion. Koller & Co., seem a little off base with this assumption.

    He should realize who he’s talking about. Nintendo has had a firm grasp on the handheld market ever since the original brick Game Boy was released. Although the PSP has probably been the most successful handheld going up against Nintendo, they still have a long way to go to tap into the same market that Nintendo has.

    As for the DSi XL, I kind of agree that it’s a bit silly to announce but that’s it, it’s just bigger. It has no other new features so no one should really feel obligated to buy it. Reminds me of the Game Boy Micro they released a while back… what a failure haha. Plus we still don’t have concrete info on when the 3DS will release. E3 will sure be interesting this year.

  2. Nintendo should just cut the damn crap up and release a single machine with no hardware upgrades. People spending their cash on a DS saw the DS lite soon, then those who spent their cash on a lite saw the DSi, etc, etc, etc, as usual from Nintendo.

    Besides, I don’t think about you guys, but I’ve never heard of 3D without glasses or any device (unless this is head tracking).

  3. i suppose the idea sounds kwl but i think children will actually like it a lot, its a good gimmick children like being able to have things jump out of the screen at them. dont know whether comparing it to movies is the same thing but i think it will work. just not fair on customers how many different DS’s are being released with new features.

  4. I stopped buying gameboys after the sp lite. They’re good products, but Nintendo is greedy by releasing minor upgrades every year.3d portable gaming might be good,but I just want upgraded visuals and a dual analog system.

  5. I think the 3DS is pretty cool. I don’t know if many people will play it or not, but I’ll probably get it anyway.

    @Thorzilla

    Really now, every piece of hardware that’s portable undergoes many revisions throughout its life cycle. DS does it, PSP does it, iPod has so many different upgrades it’s crazy. They don’t suddenly make you enjoy your system any less and no one should feel forced to buy the next one in line.

    As for the system being capable of 3D, I actually saw a video that shows it off on the DSi along with the camera features of the system.

    It’s a VERY cool feature, one that I’m very interested in the capabilities if this is what the 3DS will be about. This + tilting features + rumored new screen tech where viewing the screen at certain angles shows off different images could make for a big step in the next Nintendo portable line.

  7. Im not so sure about the 3DS. depending on its graphics and how the 3D will be ….without glasses…..i think its going to turn out pretty ghetto….but i guess we’ll have to wait for E3 10!

  8. without glasses, then it has to be Head Tracking.. will be interesting to see. By the way i think Sony will have the entire E3 press conference in 3D, imagine how cool it will be to see up coming titles in 3D Killzone 3, MotorStorm 3 maybe Infamous 2, all trailers optimized for 3D viewing. remember u heard it first from me SONY E3D conference
