Naughty Dog: Uncharted 2 Would Have Been Different Without PS3

Co-President of Naughty Dog, Evan Wells, recently told VG247 that their recently released title, Uncharted 2, would have been very different without the architecture of the PlayStation 3. However, instead of saying that Uncharted 2 wasn’t possible on 360, Wells indicated that it really comes down more to the developer talent itself and the hardware its working on than anything else.
“I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3,” said Wells, talking in an interview published today.

“Great programmers and great artists are going to make a great game. Naughty Dog will continue to push the PlayStation hardware as far as we can.

“We’re fortunate that we get to work on a system that has a hard drive and uses blu-ray for storage. Without these things, Uncharted 2 would have been a very different game. What we were able to do with the Cell processor allowed us to achieve a density of polygons and a fidelity to our effects that would simply not be possible without it.

“But ultimately, if we didn’t have a team of very talented programmers and artists, we wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of the hardware and achieve the results that we did.”

We couldn’t agree more as our review of the title definitely shows the game is worthy of the hype it receives.

  1. It’s refreshing to see developers praise the PS3 and actually not complain about working on it.

  2. It’s also refreshing to see developers not bash another system. But simply state what “is” and what “isn’t”.

  3. Wow, makes a nice change having people say nice things about the PS3 hardware. Hopefully a few teams can come out of Naughty Dog and set up some more new IPs that can also implement the PS3 hardware, now that they have the experience of building on it.

  4. Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerilla Games, Sony Santa Monica, Sony Studio Liverpool… These developers are mastering the techniques vital to creating amazing PS3 games!

  5. Valve and other companies should get off their fat asses and learn and make an effort on the hardware. Others should learn from Naughty Dog.
