PlayStation 2 continues to hurdle forward

2 Comments | posted

It’s amazing to look back almost 11 years now and realize the PlayStation 2 was just being released. I mean, we’re already 6 years into the life cycle of the PlayStation 3 and still, consumers are going out and buying its predecessor in droves. It’s quite the miracle, to be honest.

According to Sony, the PlayStation 2 has officially sold over 150 million units world wide. That’s an astronomical number for a console and something that has yet to have been achieved previously in the industry. Surprisingly enough, those 150 million consoles have also contributed over 1.50+ billion game sales for the console as well.

Let that set in a bit — that’s 1,500,000,000 worth of games. Would you even have enough shelf space in your house for that amount of software? That’s a ridiculous sum considering that only roughly 10,000 games have been developed for the console.

Oddly, Sony expected demand for the PlayStation 2 to continue throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and South America.  It’s probably only a matter of time before it’s reaching the 160m plateau.

I thought that figure would have been in the 175 million by now. The same thing will happen for the PlayStation 3 it will go on to sale 100 million +.
