Portal 2 coming to the PlayStation 3 [UPDATE]

Oh yes, Gabe Newell arrived during Sony’s conference to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3.

Valve’s Gabe Newell said the game on PS3 would be the “best console version” out of all console versions available. Yep, it’ll be better on PS3 than on the Xbox 360. Why? Because Steamworks integration is coming to the PS3, allowing cross-platform play, as well as cross-platform text messaging.

“When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform’s biggest critics,” Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve said. “However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers. As such, we are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game.”

Portal 2 will release simultaneously for the PlayStation 3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360 in 2011. Sony’s excited, with SCEA’s senior vice president of publisher relations saying:

“Valve is one of the industry’s leading studios and Portal is one of the most innovative properties launched in the past 10 years. Valve’s decision to bring Portal 2 to the PlayStation 3 with Steamworks support is incredible validation of the power and openness and momentum of PlayStation 3.”

The first footage of Portal 2 was then shown during Sony’s E3 conference. We’ll bring it to you when we can.
