PS3 Slim helps Sony outsell PS3’s last year in just six months

Worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 have been heating up since the release of the PS3 Slim. Sony basically leaked the redesign and its price cut with their projection of 13 million PS3 sales worldwide by the end of their 2009 fiscal year. That target is likely to be exceeded, but with the results we have so far, things are definitely looking up for the console.

Following our report that the sales gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was soon to drop to just 4 million units, we wanted to highlight a nice little statistical nugget. Said nugget is the fact that the PS3’s 2009-10 performance has already outsold its full 2008-09 fiscal year with six months of results still to come.

By looking at Sony’s fiscal results as compared to Microsoft’s financial year, which ends June 30th, our original report shows that sales of the PS3 in the 2008-09 year close out at 9.6 million units. In comparison, between July 1st to December 31st 2009, sales of the PS3 already stand at 9.7 million units. This trumps the previous fiscal year with another six months (January 1st-June 30th 2010) still to go. The following table, in millions, compares the two years:

Table

Sony’s fiscal year actually starts three month’s earlier than Microsoft’s on April 1st, but the advantage of using the above scale is that it allows us to see how successful the PS3 Slim has actually been. The console’s slim factor, which has recently been taken one step further, was released on September 1st and thus the above table shows its resultant boost. We eagerly await the rest of the year’s statistics.

  1. Nice going. It’s not really a surprise to be honest considering the PS3’s price is in a really good spot, but also the fact that Sony’s exclusive are just absolutely abundant this past two years.

  2. PS3 is the best value in gaming, now with the slim and the new price point. I remember Sony said they are running a marathon, not a sprint, early in the console’s life .

  3. Damn, the price drop is probably the best thing Sony could’ve done with their console.

so is sony second worldwide or still third???

  5. Uh, Sonys fiscals only go to March 31st. They have alreayd finished their fiscal year.

  6. ..sorry didnt finish that statement…
So why would you both to align it with MS’s fiscal year at all, it makes no sense.
Compare it to its own fiscal years.

  7. Patrick Steen April 26, 2010 @ 17:43

The reason to align them as such is for the following reason as explained in the article:

“The advantage of using the above scale is that it allows us to see how successful the PS3 Slim has actually been. The console’s slim factor was released on September 1st and thus the above table shows its resultant boost.”

The Slim’s launch thus falls into that Q1.

  8. So why Mention MS’s fiscal year at all? why not say “since the slim was launched last Spetember quarter?”

  9. Patrick Steen April 26, 2010 @ 17:48

Because we don’t have access to direct numbers from September, but only for the fiscal quarter starting July 1st and ending September 30th. The post is also inspired by our previous report comparing PS3 and Xbox 360 sales. Hopefully you’ll find that the content makes it very clear what we’re talking about, and notes that Sony’s fiscal year ends March 31st.

  10. Just seems a strange way to discuss it, I understand what your saying, that since launch (and lets not forget pre-production, these machines were being built before being sold) the last 1/4 reports have shown a steady increase, but I’m not sure you need to mention antying aboutt MS’s fiscal year.

Hmmm seems that people don’t like the “Fat” Ps3 as much, they prefer the slim? Jesus! when will will people learn that looks are not important!?!?!? Alwell at least the slim version is about to profit Sony because of its low cost materials and how simple it is produced compared to the fat version.

  12. wow…very impressive….well seeing as how kevin butler is doing great workd 😀

  13. @Moocows111111: I really like the slim, it keeps a “clean look” for more than an hour.

  14. @Moocows. If you think the main reason people bought a Slim is because of looks you are mistaken. The Slim was cheaper than the original PS3 design and consumers responded to the price drop. Looks have nothing to do with it for the majority of purchasers.

The global economy hitting the skids saved the 360 from being smashed in sales by PS3 at the end of ’08. PS3 was selling more globally, even at a higher price point, than 360 until the economy hit the skids and MS dropped the price of 360 consoles. In that economic climate 360 was a no brainer for mums and dads. Now PS3 is clearly the better value purchase and the sales numbers reflect it.

  15. i don’t kno if this even matters in the united states…i only worry about where i’m at, not sales elsewhere since i don’t own stock.

  16. Great news for Sony and for gamers everywhere. With the big titles of the year available only on PS3 (Uncharted 2, God Of War 3, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5) it makes sense that PS3’s are flying off the shelves.

I’ll bet those hack journalists who were claiming Sony would cancel the PS3 and leave gaming forever back in 2007 must be feeling pretty stupid right about now………….

“If you think the main reason people bought a Slim is because of looks you are mistaken. ”

Actually the reason the Ps3 is selling well is because of the price point as well as its Slick look. Besides the 360 has always been more expensive then he Ps3, (Xbox Live, Wireless Adapter Etc.) in the last 1-2 years.

  18. WOW great achievement SONY 😀

  19. Have the simple fact in regards to the maqui berry and discover if it is really because amazing since individuals have been declaring. Can it be a legitimate super fruithealth
