Rumor: Insomniac developing for multiple platforms

According to IGN.com, PlayStation exclusive developer Insomniac Games is no longer going to be developing exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Creators of such franchises as Resistance and Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac has always been known as a PlayStation developer, however, that is apparently going to change.

At GDC ’10, IGN apparently “overheard” from a source that wishes to remain anonymous that the company is working on a new IP that will be released on multiple platforms. Now, this has yet to be confirmed (of course) and the typical “no comment” has been given by the PR team from said company, but is this really that big of a deal?

When you break it down third-party exclusivity is going the way of the dinosaurs and is starting to trend towards multiple platform releases more-so than anything else. This wouldn’t be the first major exclusive developer to shift sides with plans to release on multiple platforms. In case some of you have forgotten, Bungie has expressed the desire to do so themselves as well.

While exclusivity allows a developer to create a better game (in my opinion), a talented team like the one at Insomniac should be able to deliver a quality product on multiple consoles just as effectively and we wish them the best at doing so — provided that this rumor proves to be true.

  1. Honestly, I could care less. Insomniac never really “tapped into the power of the PS3.”
Sure, the games they make are great but I don’t think going multiplatform will change the quality of their games.

  2. Wow, Insomniac is either selling out or M$ is dealing under the table because their game line-up isn’t even worth talking about this year.

Third parties have to look for a way to stay alive these days. This definitely isn’t the same as Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 but they did have some quality games. I thought A Crack in Time was great… Resistance 2, not as much but still a good PS3 exclusive. Curious to see what their next game will be. Isn’t Resistance 3 about due for a showing now? Perhaps at E3?

  4. If Insomniac leaves R&C and Resistance on the PS3 and create new IPs on the 360, I’ll be happy.

  5. @Matayo: The Xbox 360 has an excellent lineup this year.

Like jaz350z said, they don’t really tap into the PS3’s power to make their games. Their games are really fun, but they’re not exactly technical marvels. So I think they could make a 360 game of equal quality. Why not? But I think Sony should jump on the opportunity to purchase Insomniac.

They have two studios and the moment and are reportedly working on three games total.

  7. @TRF
mgs4, killzone2, uncharted2, god of war3 and the upcoming grand turismo5 are technical marvels, there are no games like these on any other platform, including pc

you fink exclusivity dosent do much? the best games of all time were exclusives
final fantasy7, god of war 2, metal gear solid 3, mario cart 64, final fantasy 10…

  8. That’s the business side of gaming talking. When you can literally double the size of your potential sales, it’s hard to ignore.

@REIGEN – Lol, Mario Kart 64? Really? I love that game to death, but… seriously? I can also bang out a few all-time multiplat gems: GTA, BioShock, Prince of Persia: SoT, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and I’m going to count Mass Effect, just because I love the game so goddamn much.

  9. FFX being included as one of the greatest games ever is even a stretch, lol

  10. I personally think Sony should buy them since they are such a good developer. But if they were to go multi-plat it wouldn’t be a huge deal. It would definitely sadden some of us just knowing Insomniac has been with PS since the beginning and now are going multi plat.

Also, if they go multi plat, I think they will get overlooked, imo. When a game is exclusive, that game is looked at more just for the fact it is exclusive. So a multi plat game from them might not do as well as it being PS3 exclusive.

They’ll still have exclusive PS games – that’s where their technology is based…but my personal opinion is that their new studio is working on another platform – most likely Wii.

  12. i dont think theyll be doing such things…theyve ALWAYS been with sony and only sony :\

“i dont think theyll be doing such things…theyve ALWAYS been with sony and only sony :\”

… Um…. Ninja Theory is moving Multiplat form.. and they made a an exclusive for the ps3. Just because a studio made something exclusive, doesn’t mean it sided with a certain company.

  14. kind of disapointing but still gud. hope thay still make R3 though loved R2. they better make good multiplats (ps3 lead dev.)

  15. Hope this isn’t true, but if it is, i hope that they could make a Wii game. If games like spyro and R&C are any example, Insomniac is a great developer of games for everyone, and a game for the Wii would be awesome provided they used the Wii to it’s true potential.

  16. If they would go multiplat I would still be happy for Insomniac and I would also be happy for the 360 only owners that they will get a peice of an awesome development team

  17. I really hope this isn’t true. Would be very disapointed if it would be true.

    I Second this comment.

  19. Insomniac make some great games and id rather they stay ps3 exclusive than multiplatform because rachet and clank and resistance are playstation brand games unless they make a new ip then it might be ok
