Sony has big things in store for June

It’s been one of the most talked about things since its announcement at CES 2009 — we’re talking about 3D gaming, of course. While there have been many skeptics and supporters of the movement, the truth of the matter is, it’s coming whether you back it or not. This June, Sony will be releasing its first set of 3D stereoscopic televisions into the retail market.

However, the televisions are just the beginning as Sony plans to release a major Firmware update (no downgrades necessary) in the month of June as well; which will add fully functioning 3D gaming opportunities. Sony has also released the games that will see the 3D bump this June.

  • Wipeout HD: full 3D game (not including WipEout HD Fury)
  • PAIN: 3 x 3D episodes + 1 x 2D tutorial
  • Super Stardust HD: full 3D game (not including DLC)
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift: single level 3D demo

“With the launch of Sony 3D TVs,” Sony tells TSA, “PS3 users are in for a treat as 3D stereoscopic gaming really comes of age.”

So, are you excited for June? Who here is planning on buying one of these bad boys? Maybe Sony will send us a Demo TV! We can dream!

I’d love to get one but I got a HDTV about a year ago so I have no plans on upgrading anytime soon.

I haven’t really been keeping up on the 3D games but it almost sounds, from the description, that these games have to be bought again to experience the 3D effects? I already own WipEout HD for one, would that be 3D ready if I ever want to try it out?

  2. Not interested in the slightest. I’m a bit of a tech junkie, and usually like to be the first into everything – but I’m not interested in 3DTV or 3D gaming at all.

  3. I will buy one. . . . . . when there’s no need for special glasses AND the viewing angle improves.

Do you imagine the need for 3 or 4 glasses just to play Resistance with some friends?. Not cool at all. . .

  4. At around £2600/$4000 for the tv not to mention glasses and a 3D source, aswell as many only upgrading to HD recently why would anyone really bother?

  5. Maybe this holiday, as long their are ” good” game that support 3D.

i thought sony announced that they where the first to do 3d tv, now samsung i think is saying its first…whats up?

  7. not worth it. Until there are no glasses or anything, I will stick with the old fashion way.

  8. Just had to say, terrible stock photo.

Great now I have to by an 3D-HD TV, for teh 3D goodness XD. Thing is, I wear glasses and when Avatar the movie came on, it felt weird having to wear 2 eyewear at the same time =./

Oh great, and I bet the whol 1% of the market that will own a 3D TV will enjoy this..maybe.

  11. hmm the pacific rift 3d demo seems interesting….but i doubt the 3d hype will get anywhere lol

  12. @Dave-The-Rave My thoughts precisely and that 1% will be people who have more money than brains.

  13. 3D gaming on consoles wont be a big deal for gamers for atleast another generation or 2 because of the tvs. People who have HDTV’s wont upgrade to 3dhd for many years and the people who havent even upgraded to HD probably wont jump to 3dhd because of the $$$$’s. so im thinking probably by the time of the PS4 or PS5 for 3d tvs to getout to the masses. but im dumb so

  14. @matta: i dont even think itll even happen just yet -_-

they have to make it 3d to the point of realism or something….so we dont get all headache-y after a while…..just like in Policenauts…3d pictures replaced 3d ones….

  15. i would need to sell my car to jump onto 3d wagon to buy an 3d HDTV, Although i feel 3d compatible PC monitor will get cheaper faster in comparison to LCD or LED tv’s. So maybe there is a hope i can get one of those Monitors. but not any time, not anytime in 2010.

I really want to play Super StarDust HD, it would be so cool in 3d, other games on that list doesn’t excite me that much. KZ2, inFamous, R2, GoW3, Uncharted 2 and every MOVE supported game i would love to see get 3D treatment.

  16. Its just the begining. Buy a 24″-27″ 3D moniter for less than $300.00 dollars. The price will fall fast as more people make these TVs, and as tech gains ground.

more games on the PS3 will divide into either Move games, 3D games, or High Graphic games with AI and physics as the PS3 cant do it all with out a hit.
These TVs will be more important when PS4 comes out running 1080P 3D at 120 FPS.

  17. my purchase plans were cancled
but i will get one as soon as i win the lotery
