Sony: NGP not gears towards Ultra-Rich

$999, $599, $399, and $349.99. These are just some of the examples of pricing points that have been directed towards Sony’s upcoming hand held device, the NGP. While speculation started swirling about price point once the device was revealed and the featured set of the hand held was finally realized — nobody truly knows what to expect.

Unfortunately, Sony has been silent on the cash factor and it’s commonly believed that those little bad boys aren’t cheap to manufacture. Though Sony is looking to make an impact during this generation of hand held and is aiming to take market share away from the competition, it can be quite easy for the company to price itself out of the running early on. After all, the Nintendo 3DS has a lot of people having similar concerns for Nintendo.

According to Jim Ryan, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s VP, the PSP2 is not going to be directed towards the “ultra-rich.” The plan is to sell the device at an affordable price that is market ready to move.

“Sony’s ambitions when it comes to installed base are considerable, so we’re not talking about the ultra-rich.”

Of course, we’ve heard this all before and we’ve all lived through the $599 price point of the PlayStation 3 upon launch, but perhaps Sony truly has learned from that mistake. To be honest, I’m assuming the device is going to retail at $249-299, which is reasonable for what is on offer. However, if Sony wants to probably take a loss per unit sold and take a dig into Nintendo, I wouldn’t be too shocked to see a $229.99 price point come release day.

  1. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…

I reckon it’ll be slightly more than whatever the 3DS costs at the time of release. So if the 3DS is $229, the NGP/PSP2 will be $249.

    Typooooo title!! 😀

  3. Ahhh. Sony is not reaching for the ultra rich… they’re just reaching for the rich so is nothing to worry about!!! *facepalm* Sony’s new handheld will be priced $100 more of whatever price point the 3ds is. If it’s priced at $50 more than 3ds then I will be amazed. If is priced on par with 3ds… perhaps the world ended and we’re on heaven?

  4. just give me the new uncharted game and i wont mind spending a 1000 eur on a psp2
aldow i do beliewe the price is gona be ap 250 to 300 usd

    • The PSPGO was 250 usd on release and the technology it has was ridicuosly outdated by then yet the price point was quite high. Quad cores are outdated sinse like 2-3 years too but still relevant sinse games dont even use them fully. It wont be 250 usd.

  5. Trophy support!
