Update: Sony plans to relaunch the PSN service May 31st

Update: Sony’s Patrick Seybold has issued a statement regarding yesterday’s report from Bloomberg stating that the report was misleading and Sony is “trying to clean it all up now.”

On the official PS Blog, Seybold said that PS3 owners can expect a date within the next few days.

“At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days,” said Seybold. “We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.”

Original: A spokesperson for Sony Japan has noted that the PlayStation Network and Qriocity music service may not be fully restored until the end of May.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Tokyo-based Sony representative Shigenori Yushida stated that a complete relaunch of Sony’s PSN service may not happen until May 31.

Shut down on April 20th, the PSN service outage is nearing the 20 day mark, with Sony continually giving excuses to why the service hasn’t been restored.

Last week, Sony began internal testing of the new software and security systems, promising that features such as Home, friends lists, and chat functionality would soon be making a return. However on Saturday, SCEE’s Nick Chaplin stated that due to further testing and the damage done to Sony Online Entertainment servers, Sony needed to delay the return of the service.

“We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system,” said Chaplin.

“We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen.”

This issue doesn’t hurt just Sony, but developers who have released recent multiplayer titles such as Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and Brink. If Sony truly intends to wait until May 31 to bring the service back online, I have a feeling game sales for PS3 versions of such titles are going to take quite a dip.

  2. @deakdeak – Ignore this article. Like so many other gaming sites, it’s spreading misinformation.

Online gaming will be back BEFORE May 31st. The end of May is the date Sony have been aiming at all along to get PSN back to full functionality.

Nothing has really changed since Sony’s original announcement. Seems 99% of the gaming media have taken a poorly-written article on Bloomberg and run with it, without actually looking deeper into what was actually said.

Online gaming will be back soon. Things like the Store and Qriocity may take until the 31st.
