For those still entrenched in the world of Gran Turismo 5, a new patch is now available for the Real Driving Simulator. Unlike the last few updates that either gave content or were in preparation for new DLC, this one is simply for fixing some gameplay issues. The patch weighs in at 79MB, and the patch notes are as follows:

Improved the performance of online races to provide a better racing experience. However, please note that using voice chat with 12 or more players can reduce screen refresh intervals.

Reduced wobbling of the screen when using the Chase view (The Chase view is when the car is viewed from the rear during races and replays, selected by using the SELECT button).

Electric cars (opponent cars and your cars in B-Spec) will now pit-in automatically to recharge the battery.

Reduced the amount of steering pull when using force feedback steering wheel controllers in banks on courses such as the Special Stage Route X Oval.

When driving formula cars using the Logitech steering wheel controllers, the initial force feedback amount has been lessened and adjusted to make it easier to drive in a straight line.

Fixed an issue where speedometer, race position and best lap time info are sometimes not displayed on the 2nd player side in 2P Battle Mode.

Fixed an issue where exhaust sound is heard even after switching from a combustion engine car to an electric car within the same online race.

Fixed an issue where if the game is started without signing in online and then saved, the cars and courses included in the Racing Car Pack and Course Pack would become unusable.

Fixed an issue where electric cars would not recharge in the pit and become immobile.

Fixed an issue where when the oil of the Toyota Prius was changed in GT Auto, the motor ceased to function correctly.

Improved the force feedback of the Guillemot Thrustmaster T500 RS, where the 10 level force feedback adjustment (especially when using the X2010 and X2011) was not working effectively. Also improved a condition where it was difficult to drive in the intended path.

This time is no different--well, other than the fact that they didn't title it Game of the Year edition or something like that--as an updated version of Gran Turismo 5 will be released in North America on the 17th of January.

What's are the details? Well for one, it's retailed at $39.99. The package will include the recent 2.0 update, a massive patch of tweaks and changes, as well as a $20 coupon for DLC to go with the game. Check out the sleek, reversible cover:

Polyphony Digital continues to work diligently on tweaking Gran Turismo 5, and have just released a shiny new update for PlayStation's flagship racer. Quite a bit has been changed since the last update, and the fine folks over at GT Planet have all of the details. Check them out below:

Major Changes and New Features

Wheels can now be changed on Standard cars.

Downloadable contents can now be shared by multiple users with the Family Upgrade.
(See Polyphony’s complete FAQ for more details.)

Cars purchased through DLC will now appear in the Car Dealerships. You can purchase additional versions of the same vehicles within the game using earned race credits.

A copy button has been added to the lower left of the settings screen. A settings sheet saved in either A/B/C can now be copied to A, B or C.

Gifts

Toyota 86 GT ’12 will be available to all players who install the 2.02 update.

Free coupons have been added that allow you to wash cars, change oil, overhaul your engine, or restore chassis rigidity in GT Auto. 10 coupons will be distributed for free to each of those who have downloaded the 2.02 update.

The Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 SPL. and five New Car Refresh cards will be provided to customers purchasing any DLC packs released in October 2011. The New Car Refresh can be used from the Special Coupons option in the items list, and will return your car to its brand new condition (before breaking-in the car’s engine). Equipped parts and current paint on the car will not be affected by this card.

Other Improvements

Pressing the □ button in the car coupon selection screen of the Car Delivery, will now allow you to exchange all car coupons at once (maximum number of coupons you can receive at once is 100).

Tire-wear speed adjustment

In GT Auto you can now see how the oil changes, aerodynamic parts, engine overhauls, and racing modifications will affect performance points and engine power, before and after their application.

In screens where the [Garage] and [Driver List] buttons are displayed in the A/B Spec events, Special Events, and Seasonal Events, pressing the □ button will now show the [Garage], and pressing the △ button will show the drivers list.

An option has now been added for ‘Max. number of participants – this is featured in the room settings of My Lounge.

Added ☆ marks which show the number of Gold Trophies attained in each event, in the event selection screen of seasonal events.

Racing sound effect adjustment

Steering assist controls (used when using certain controllers on Racing Karts) have been adjusted. This applies to steering wheels with a 200 degree turning radius. The [Steering Type] (Amateur/Professional) settings in the Game Options will be ignored, and the controller’s steering angle will now directly affect the tire turning angle of the car.

Correction of Known Issues

Fixed issue where you would overrun without resetting, when entering pit lane at low speed on some tracks.

Fixed issue with Performance Points calculations for the Red Bull X2010 and the X2011.

Fixed issue where the rear wing/aerodynamic settings were reset when switching between setting sheets.

An issue was corrected where the car would become stuck in autopilot from the pit lane if a certain condition is met in an endurance race on the Tsukuba Circuit. Also revised the entry route during pit stops and speed judgement.

Improved multi-monitor stability

Gran Turismo 5 has regained some positive buzz after releasing its massive Spec 2.0 update and announcing plans for DLC, and the first batch of add-on content has caught on quite well.

In a video interview with GamerLive.TV at this year's SEMA car show, US Gran Turismo producer Taku Imasaki says that the new content has hit one million downloads. While the interview was just posted, the car show ended on November 2nd, so that number can only have increased since then.

The full interview is below, where Imasaki also discusses how judges, including GT executive producer Kazunori Yamauchi, select a car from the show every year to be put into a future Gran Turismo release.

In a bit of unfortunate news, North American Gran Turismo 5 fans will have to wait just a bit longer to get their hands on the DLC that was detailed last week.

Via an announcement on Sony Computer Entertainment America's Twitter account, we learned that we'd have to wait until October 25th before we can purchase the new cars and tracks. While no further details were given, Sony promised that the DLC would come with a "special bonus" to make up for the inconvenience.

The DLC is already released in Asian regions, and the European release was only delayed by a couple of hours.

I can't think of a reason for the delay, as even GT producer Kazunori Yamauchi was surprised. I guess all we can do is sit tight.

Day and date with the release of Microsoft's Forza Motorsport 4, Polyphony Digital have released the major update to Gran Turismo 5 that was detailed last week. It's a hefty download, clocking in at well over 1 GB of data, so get crackin'.

The DLC that was announced last week has also been fully detailed, and is especially good news for people that have been hankerin' for some more go-kart action. The DLC will be made available on October 18th, and includes the following according to the PlayStation Blog:

Course Pack ($4.99)

The Course Pack, will include two courses completely new to Gran Turismo. The first course is the world-famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps located in Spa, Belgium. At 7km long, this course is widely known as one of the most challenging race courses in the world due to its many twists and turns and elevation changes. And every inch of the track has been painstakingly recreated as only Polyphony can.

The second course is a flashy indoor karting arena designed by Polyphony Digital, and comes with two layouts to race. Lit with neon lighting, the kart arena not only showcases the beauty of GT5’s graphics and lighting engines, but also adds a crazy twist to the outdoor karting areas that shipped with GT5.

Racing Car Pack ($7.99)

The Racing Car Pack adds 11 custom PDI-designed custom touring editions of fan favorites like the Mazda RX-7, Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Nissan GT-R, Honda CR-Z, and even a race tuned Toyota Prius, among others. The pack also includes three new racing karts. But what makes the Racing Car Pack really cool is that it also features the never-before-seen Red Bull X2011 Prototype vehicle. The Red Bull X2010, a machine built for pure speed, was the ultimate prize in Gran Turismo 5, and the Red Bull X2011 Prototype is the next evolution in design. In other words, that’s 15 new vehicles to add to your collection and master.

Racing Gear Pack ($2.99)

Also available will be the Racing Gear Pack, which features 90 pieces of racing gear, including racing suits and helmets, for your in-game drivers. Included are GT original design helmets and suits, white and black Alpinestars suits, the official 2010 and 2011 season racing suits and helmets of 4 top NASCAR drivers, and racing gear of 4 other celebrity race car drivers including Sebastien Loeb and Peter Solberg.

Paint Pack ($1.99)

And last but not least is the Paint Pack, featuring 100 paint colors to customize your cars with. The pack includes new shades of matte, chrome and aluminum colors. It’s time to breathe some new life into your car collection.

You can also pick up all of the DLC as a bundle for $11.99, and PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to get it for even cheaper.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty excited for GT5 again.

Gran Turismo 5 is a game that we've tried really, really hard to love. At it's very core, it plays better than any other console sim on the market, but everything else -- from the clumsy UI, long load times, ugly Standard cars, and so forth -- has been such a hamper that the franchise suddenly seemed like a shell of its former self. With Turn 10's Forza Motorsport 4 launching next week on the Xbox 360, Polyphony Digital have picked a key time to introduce a major update to the game, fixing many of the things that were wrong with GT5 upon release. We're told to expect this free update in the next few weeks.

In the update, every single car in the game will now have an interior view, including the Standard cars. They obviously won't be as detailed as their Premium counterparts, but it's a nice addition regardless. For all of you Photo Mode junkies (myself included), you can finally -- FINALLY -- fast-forward and rewind at will to get the exact shot that you want. If you're crazy enough to play through endurance races, you can now save your progress mid-race and pick it up later -- no more being trapped by a race 3, 8, 12, or 24 hours at a time. NASCAR vehicles get their 2011 season liveries, the Logitech G25 and G27 racing wheels are now fully and officially supported, load times are improved, and all is right with the world.

The game will also start receiving (presumably) paid DLC which will include your standard tracks and cars, hopefully including some of the newer models that will be appearing in Forza 4 but were too new to make the cut in GT5. Finally, the game is now immediately available for $39.99.

And just like that, it seems that this car sim rivalry is interesting again.

This week at Gamescom, VG 24/7 had the chance to sit down with Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios. They discussed a variety of subjects, including the recent PS3 price cut, the challenges of launching Vita in a completely different handheld market, and the future of Move.

Just as notably, they also discussed a couple of games that are on the minds of PlayStation fans, and it seems that The Last Guardian and Gran Turismo 6 aren't coming along as quickly as fans would hope. When asked if we would hear about these games at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show or if we would have to wait longer than that, Yoshida responded with the following:

"I’d say it could be a little bit longer. As far as the Gran Turismo team’s concerned, they are still working on updating the games, so they’re just shifting to the designing and concepting phase of the next project. It’s going to take a few years.

The Last Guardian team has been making progress. It’s been very difficult in terms of seeing the progress: not as fast as we’d been hoping for, and the team has been under big pressure. But we’re still making progress, so I’d like to continue to support and keep waiting for great news sometime in the future."

Fans holding on to hope that they could see The Last Guardian launch in the near future will surely be disappointed by that quote, and it makes me wonder if we'll see the game launch within the first half of 2012.

As for Gran Turismo 6, development was allegedly already underway before GT5 had even released, so it would have been nice to see the game come out before the end of next year. Polyphony Digital could get away with their sloth-like development cycle when they were the only console racing sim in town, but with Turn 10 pumping out Forza games on the 360 they can no longer rest on their laurels, especially after GT5 was such a disappointment.

You'll have to excuse the video quality during the gameplay sections, but at least you can get an idea of what the menus and options are.
