Nintendo will launch its Wii U hardware sometime next year, and reports running claim Microsoft is set to unveil the next Xbox – said to be codenamed ‘TEN’ – at CES 2012 in January. If that all pans out, we may be seeing the PlayStation 3’s successor sometime next year.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are both fine pieces of hardware, responsible for some of gaming's greatest experiences. But have they peaked from a technical standpoint? Dan Houser of Rockstar Games seems to think so.

"Until they've got implants in your head or a holodeck, they've kind of done everything you can imagine," Houser said. "The challenges are smaller in some ways - or less [about] these big things [and more about] implementing what you've got better and better. What people want in consoles is ease of use, stability, reliability, and new things."

Consoles have evolved into something far more than just games machines -- they're the anchor of entertainment centers in living rooms all over the world. Media streaming, internet browsing, 3D, and motion gaming can all be found in today's machines. Graphics can improve, sure, but will that be enough to grab anyone besides the hardcore gamer when the new generation of consoles eventually hits?

What do you think? Let us know below.

Simple thought: copycats are everywhere, and that's perfectly fine. It’s a sentiment that I’ve held for a long time, but recent news of the Nintendo making a 3DS peripheral to add a second circle pad have finally pushed me over the top. Well, not the actual news, but rather fan reaction.

I read the news on a popular Nintendo news blog, and the comments on this particular news post was surprisingly flooded with anti-Nintendo comments along the lines of “Ha, looks like this time Nintendo’s copying Sony.” Usually, the site is full of anti-Sony comments along the lines of “lulz, Sony can’t stop copying Nintendo,” but that's neither here nor there.

What I really want to know is: who cares?

Now, you obviously can’t scratch the brand name off of a product and re-sell it as your own. What you can do, though, is take an idea and improve upon it. Between Nintendo and Sony, they’ve done it several times to each other. Things like the DualShock, Gamecube discs, PSP, Move, and 3DS' circle pad add-on simply wouldn't exist without the competitor’s innovations, and they were all in the name of improving upon the other’s shortcomings.

The most maddening part of the entire argument (from either side) is that once one company does something, then it somehow becomes immoral for another to do anything similar. If that were true, nothing would ever get done. Imagine if only Henry Ford were allowed to use the assembly line at his manufacturing plant, or if he was the only one allowed to manufacture cars. Hell, just imagine if no one but Magnavox were able to make game consoles just because their Odyssey was the first one on the market.

Everyone’s familiar with that slightly jealous “why didn’t I think of that?” mentality, and there are plenty of instances outside of the gaming industry in which improving on an idea leads to bigger, better things in the long run, which breeds healthy competition that ultimately benefits the consumer. Apple’s success with their iPhone and iPad have led to a great selection of Android-powered smartphones and tablets. Toyota’s Prius led to an influx of other manufacturers creating their own hybrid vehicles. Snuggies and Slankets. The list goes on.

Within this current generation of video game machines, there’s very little that you can consider to be an original idea. The PS Vita is an evolution of what the PSP was, and its touchscreens are an improvement over the archaic ones used on Nintendo’s DS and 3DS. The Move was a blatant attempt at getting in on the motion craze, but it still offered 1:1 tracking that was lacking in pre-MotionPlus Wii controls. The second 3DS circle pad, while clumsily handled, is at least an admission that there are better control options for a handheld. Both the DualShock and the Xbox 360 controllers are essentially evolutions of the SNES controller introduced 20 years ago.

The software side of this phenomenon is even more apparent, with a consistent history of borrowing ideas. Arcade shoot-em-ups and fighting games in the 80s and 90s spawned countless me-too titles, including great games such as Galaga and Mortal Kombat. The 16-bit era saw a flood of mascot-based platforming games trying to capitalize on the Sonic and Mario craze, although games such as Bubsy and Awesome Possum are better off forgotten. Today, we have (approximately) 800 first-person shooters with a modern warfare backdrop due to the success of Call of Duty 4, while third-person action games such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine take as many cues as they can from Gears of War ... a game which ultimately owes a tremendous amount to Resident Evil 4.

It’s not impossible to be annoyed by the way companies do business these days, especially when they try their damndest to spin their ideas as 100 percent original. However, to pretend that this wonderful medium of ours isn’t built on the evolution of older ideas, concepts, and technology is simply crazy. Without the healthy competition that comes with game companies constantly trying to one-up each other for our affection (or wallets, whatever), the entire industry would be a boring, stagnant mess.

Next time you like something because it's so original and great, take a second to remember: it isn't.

In the game development field, few names come more highly praised or respected than John Carmack's. Simply put, if he's got something to say, you listen, and you listen good.

At QuakeCon last week Carmack spoke to Dave Oshry of RipTen, during which he was asked what he thought of the PlayStation 3. Carmack replied simply: "Well, it's the second-best console ever made." Naturally, this led to Oshry asking what he thought was tops: "The 360."

When he elaborated, Carmack said that it had less to do with the PS3's raw power, and more with the system's dev tools.

It's an interesting viewpoint, and the ease of development is something that's commonly discussed by other developers. As for calling the Xbox 360 the best console ever, it's actually something that I explored several months ago. It's hard for me to let go of my beloved SNES or PS2, though.

Electronic Arts will start closing down the online services of a couple of games on August 11, the most important ones probably being Skate, Battlefield 2 and Army of Two. Here’s the official statement which can be found on the company’s support site:

“The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles below a point -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage”.

Additionally, the site includes a complete list of the games that are going offline along with some other details. These are the games which will lose online support in just a few weeks:

ARMY OF TWO (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360)

ARMY OF TWO Demo (Xbox 360)

Battlefield 2142 Demo (PC)

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (Xbox 360)

Need for Speed Most Wanted (PC and Xbox 360)

Today, the NPD Group has officially announced that it has discontinued any plans to release hardware sales figures on a monthly basis for the gaming industry. Surprisingly, this comes as a shock as it something not many people saw coming and definitely removes one of the key highlights a lot of gamers looked forward to on a monthly basis (despite negatively driven).

Obviously, this decision comes down more-so to money than it does anything else as the NPD Group uses a subscription service in order to service subscribers with this information. By canning the amount of free information being released to the public, it should push more people into subscribing to the service to find out the details they're looking for.

According to the NPD Group, they don't feel as though this has changed anything and have encouraged the hardware companies to release its monthly figures to the public as they see fit.

“Clients can release their figures, which we can verify, but it shouldn’t be up to NPD to release these figures. Our corporate publishing guidelines changed, but nothing has changed client-side.”

How do you guys feel about this decision? Is this something that you feel hampers part of the monthly excitement the industry provided from an outside source? Do you think this will have a positive effect on the console war that often plagues forums or do you think this will make it worse without any concrete data to back things up now?

Osamu Murata, ex-sound creator of Shenmue, recently started Tweeting about how he feels towards Shenmue Town being announced as a mobile title for hand held platforms. Murata didn't hold back in stating that this would result in a huge drop in quality and that that is something Yu Suzuki, Shenmue's original game designer, would never have wanted for the franchise. In fact, Murata makes it very clear that Suzuki would have preferred for the franchise to have seen the light of day on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

"I have complicated feelings about Shenmue appearing on Yahoo! Mobage," Tweeted Murata. "I actually worked on Shenmue, working quite a bit with Yu. However, Yahoo! Mobage is being started up by a friend of mine.

"What makes this complicated for me is that Yu has lowered the quality. Shenmue above all else required top quality. There was no compromise for quality in Shenmue, and if there was compromise, Yu would get extremely angry as us.”

"When I think about the the current state of Sega and Yu that required Shenmue to become a light game, I have complicated feelings," he added. "I'm certain that he wanted to release Shenmue on PS3 or Xbox. This is definitely not how Yu feels about Shenmue. The sound of the bikes, the sound of glass, the facial motion of kids, how the flags were made to stand, the walking motion, the running motion, the pursuit of beauty for the female characters. He worked so hard even if he would collapse or get sick."

It's actually hard to read all of this and not feel frustrated about the direction this series is heading. What is still considered to be one of the greatest franchises ever released is going to be lowered to nothing more than a mobile installment that does not do the series justice whatsoever. Knowing that this game should have seen the light of day on a next-generation platform only makes matters worse.

I'm sure fans of the series are going to feel as though they've been betrayed as their loyalty and long winded cries for a proper sequel have obviously fallen on deaf ears. We'll see where this goes from here and hopefully one day, another Shenmue sees a console release.

For the first time in 10 years, Medal of Honor is leaving the WWII era and placing gamers in the Middle East. To give players an idea of what is in store, Electronic Arts has released a new Medal of Honor Experience trailer for your viewing pleasure.

Titled "Friends from Afar," the video features a pair of U.S. snipers and their mission to execute Taliban from across a snow covered ravine. According to Electronic Arts, Medal of Honor is inspired by real events, working closely with Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community on the game's development.

When watching the trailer, notice the flies buzzing around at about 1:20min in. An interesting observation to the detail provided in Medal of Honor. Also, keep in mind Medal of Honor releases October 12th in the US, October 15th in UK.

Not only does the Xbox 360 lead the way in Britain, but the Xbox 360 S broke sales records in the country. Funnily enough, despite all of that, British PlayStation 3 gamers look more interested in motion controls than their Xbox counterparts.

According to Groupola (dedicated to daily deals in the UK), British PS3 gamers are more likely to adopt PlayStation Move than Xbox 360 gamers are to adopt Microsoft's Kinect this Holiday season.

The company surveyed over 2,000 UK gamers and a staggering 64% of PS3 owners said they were willing to purchase PlayStation Move. Sadly, Kinect only garnered the attention of a meagre 23% of Xbox 360 gamers.

This drastic difference is honestly startling as Kinect has been widely sought after across the world and in the UK - its apparently picking up booming pre-orders.

So with the announcement of Sony's latest financial results came an update on the console sales race. As reported in a previous story, the gap between the PS3 and Xbox 360 is now only 3.6 million units. But how did the PS3 achieve it? We'd thought we'd update our comparison to Microsoft's financial year.

Last week I told you that the PS3 had already outsold the entire Xbox 360's 2010 fiscal-year sales with three months to go. Sony has now reported those three months as being a higher than expected 2.4 million units. Although Sony and Microsoft run on different fiscal years, it's certainly interesting to look at the past 12 months.

During Sony's fiscal-2010 year (April 1st 2009 to March 31st 2010) the PS3 sold 13 million units. But in the past 12 months, the PS3 sold 14.3 million units. That's in comparison to the Xbox 360's 10.3 million units. The PS3 sold a whole 4 million units more than the 360 in just 12 months.

Quite the feat and if it continues (the Xbox 360 S and Kinect are wild cards) the PS3 will have sold more than the Xbox 360 by the first half of 2011.
