The Blackbuster Special: Which motion control has more potential?

98 Comments | posted

Professor Blackbuster Critic is back this week with an entirely new video and look at both Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming motion technology. While this topic has been beaten to death by many journalists around the industry, it’s never too late for a good debate over the two.

In this episode, BBC discusses which motion control has the most potential for gamers on an overall level. Don’t think he’s taking it easy on Sony either as the Professor points out a severe flaw that will prevent Sony’s motion technology from being successful. As always, feel free to comment below with your opinion and to debate other freely.

We’ve included the video below.

  • oh, and what was the “severe flaw” that the PS3 wand had? Not that I want it to be flawed, but U didn’t point it out…

  • So let me see If i get this straight:

It’s bad that microsoft has showed hardly anything about Natal even though it won’t be launched until like November, but it’s good that Sony hasn’t showed ANYTHING about the Wand? not a single game not a single showcase that wasn’t just a “possible videogame” being controlled by the creator

Natal Running Katamari and burnout is not impressive but the Wand running a “possible RTS” is impressive?

Yeah, I mean it’s not like you could possibly use your hands in an RTS game /sarcasm

    Finally:

How is the sword swinging impressive? The Wiimote’s been doing that for ages
Natal looks ideal for that as well

Other than the fact that the Wand will have buttons and the fact that natal has a 1 second lag this was like hearing a 5 year old defending their favourite toy

  • Type your message here…

  • wow i have no idea how that happened and natal will end up killing people

  • @Devante Blood

BBC pointed out that he didn’t like the dildo design of the motion wand. But you have to forgive Sony. They probably want to attract girl gamers.

  • @Blinky- Yes it’s dominating in sales but Wiis everywhere are collecting dust….save for the occasional good title

  • @stika
If you paid more attention to the video, he stated Sony showed it was compatable with certain games that are already out such as RE5, LBP, Flower, High Velocity Bowling, and EyePet. That’s 5 demostrations of what it can do.

Natal couldn’t run a RTS, at least not like the “wand” can. You need high precision in order to do what the “wand” did with that RTS sample. MS’s demonstration of how you have to splash paint everywhere indicates Natal is lacking precision. If it was precise they would’ve used a paint brush or something.

The sword swing is very impressive because once again the precision is amazingly accurate. I haven’t seen a game on the wii that can do what this sample did, it’s usually pre-rendered actions such as if you move the wii mote mostly vertically, horizontally, or diagnally the character will do a corresponding action but it doesn’t actually move with the wii mote it just responds to particular movements from it. In other words the movements are like buttons. Vertical swing is A, Horizontal is B, and Diagnal is Z, and each button activates a certain action.

If you move the wii mote in let’s say a circular movement, the character won’t do anything unless that movement (button) was programmed into the game to do something, or it’ll mistaken it for a vertical, or so, slash.

The “wand” showed that the eye tracks it’s every movement and displays it on screen, so you can move the “wand” in any fasion and the character wil move the same (at least the arms will).

Natal would do what wii sword games have been doing but maybe a little better. Swing your arms in a vertical, horizontal, or diagnal motion and it’ll do the same. It doesn’t have the precision and reaction speed to do what the “wand” did with a sword, for once again their painting demonstration shows this.

  • Nice to put this up on a PS site.

BTW everybody loves reading fanboys arguing so keep it up.

  • ever wonder what the bottom of avatar’s shoe looks like? BAM THERE IT IS!

  • This is a very agreeable video, i feel the same way, where even though Natal may have some more non gaming potential, like user login and stuff, ps3 motion controller has more GAMING potential, which is what the video was trying to prove. Also, i always wondered why everyone is so impressed by Natal? I never understood it, because i have an EyeToy and a PlayStation Eye that basically do the same thing. Is Kinetic for EyeToy, and EyeToy chat, and Antigrav not real full body motion controlled games? Also, if you search up every tech demo of the eyetoy, that is basically what Natal is. There is a tech demo where Rick from Sony R&D is actually playing an early version of something that looks similar to the Microsoft ricochet game, scanning things, and showing body tracking. Its like Microsoft took all the Sony research, and tech demos, and made an upgraded EyeToy for 360, as the PS Eye is capable of most of the things Natal can do.

  • Very good points you pointed out

  • Okay for some reason or another my links were not posted

    that is bs

here’s the video with the update

  • I’d say the best solution with current or nearly current technology would be a combination of the two ideas: Project Natal’s potential for facial and whole body recognition combined with the accuracy of Sony’s wand would have an inconceivable amount of gaming potential. Also, instead of a wand, a pair of glove controllers would be best.

  • inuboy@ lol still crying from that beatdown that bbc gave to you few weeks ago? ok ok then good oh still having trouble getting a girlfriend? and how is that liquid ocealot takeing over the world thing going? ooooooohhhhhh not going so good there buddy you {EPIC FAILURE}.

  • Wow, Natal is going to cause crazy injuries. Imagine holding your arms out like that driving Burnout for four hours?

BTW. That avatar looked like it was possessed!!!

  • @ O-EXTRA In case you didn’t notice, When sony used the Wand to control your character in resident evil 5, the person controlling the character was using the Wand and the Dualshock 3 AT THE SAME TIME, how is this an improvment? All of the other games you mentioned weren’t the least bit impressive, hey, if Burnout and Katamari isn’t impressive then neither if Flower or Little Big Plannet

Riiight, Because the Wand was SO precise am I right? Remember in the E3 showing when they were trying to aim a bow to the left and the guy couldn’t move the bow for like 5 seconds? So there goes your high-precision

Everything I saw about the Wand so far could have been done just as well with the Wii, specially considering there’s a new Wii motion plus
    .

I love the fact that you already know which one is more precise even though none of them are out, hell you. Specially when you say that the eye tracks the movement of the user….. huh… doesn’t natal actually use 3 cameras?

  • @ O-EXTRA Here, see for yourself how the Wand works with RE5:

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/102/1027961p1.html

“You play with one hand holding the Wand and the other a Dual Shock 3. ”

What’s the point of owning a wand then?

  • inuboy@ yes you did and i recall you didn’t respond back to bbc about it and yeah it was funny to see your parents fighting your battles and it was funny as hell when that yahoo answers user respond to saying “you are probaly ugly” which is very true sorry it is truth and you will never be a bad boy a serial killer but not a bad boy and calling me a moronic fuck always makes me laugh because it shows you are dumb and imature so thank you and how about a nice cup of shut the fuck up

  • @O-EXTRA
“Other than that, it is basically the wii mote but more accurate due to the Eye being more capable of picking up your movements than the wii’s motion bar.”
Just wanted to let you know that the Wii’s sensor bar has nothing to do with the motion. The motion is built inside the controller itself. The sensor bar just releases IR light for the pointer. That’s the only thing it is for. Anyways I’m probably alone in this but I don’t want Wii ports. I rather have brand new games and/or sequels to Wii games already out.

  • Good vid BBC. I’ve paid very little attention to these motion controls, I always thought they were gimmicky, but the idea of playing a Demon’s Souls type of game with two controls really makes this idea practical instead of some cheap novelty.
