The Last Guardian to feature more puzzles, less combat

Fumito Ueda, designer of The Last Guardian and creator of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has been pretty busy this past week at the annual Tokyo Game Show. The designer has openly displayed his hopefulness for a simultaneous release of his upcoming title in both Europe and Japan, but also has given up some tasty tidbits of information in regards to The Last Guardian itself. While we’re disappointed he didn’t include North America with his release date plans, we’ll forgive him due to the expectancy of his new game being an instant classic.

Speaking with Eurogamer at this past week’s show, Ueda discussed that The Last Guardian was going to feature a lot more puzzles than Ico and far less combat. “I think there will be a bit less combat in The Last Guardian,” he said, before confirming that their will be a larger emphasis on puzzles.

“We’ll have larger objects in this new game, and that will be a big difference compared to previous titles. It will be a more dynamic type of game.”

Something you can also expect in The Last Guardian is perhaps a lot more physics-based puzzles as well as things you’d really never expect. This has brought our anticipation of the title up immensely, “We’ve used a lot of physics elements in the previous games, but this time around we’ve introduced a full-scale physics element into the game. So that generated some consequences and features that we never expected to see. I think this will mean the game turns out to have some good things we never expected before.”
