What’s up, PSU Alumni? Over the last couple of months, Sony has been producing more and more game collections. Usually sporting around 2-3 games and being sold at a reduced price, these collections are steals. Today I’m going to show you four top notch collections that are worth a look at, as well as when to expect them and how much they will go for.

Resistance Greatest Hits Dual Pack

Release: Out Now

Price: $39.99

Includes: Resistance: Fall of Man & Resistance 2

This one is out already, and it’s a really good one for those who haven’t had a chance to get into this franchise. On top of that, it’ll get you nice and ready for Resistance 3.

Resistance is  one of my personal favorite first person shooters. The story focuses on a mysterious alien race known as Chimera, who has taken Russia and most of Europe in 1951. As a result of this, World War II never happened. You play Nathan Hale, a US military sergeant whose aiding a British military strike in a final attempt at saving Europe. In Resistance 2, he finds himself back in the US as the Chimera have invaded.  The hell he sees over the course of the games is a sight to behold and makes for one of the most engaging stories for the PS3.

For those who have neither game, this is a must buy. The Resistance series has remained one of the most consistently great series for the PS3 since its launch day. I guarantee you will not regret it. With DLC added to the pack for Resistance 2 & 3; this is bargain.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection

Release:  September 27

Price: $39.99

Includes: ICO & Shadow of the Colossus

Few games have as much acclaim as these two games, and it’s for great reason. These games put Team ICO on the map, and are considered classics from the PS2 era.

The stories for both games are pretty simple. In ICO, you control a boy of the same name who is locked away in an abandon fortress. Its there he encounters a princess named Yorda, whose mother plans to use her to expand her life. After learning this, ICO makes it his goal to escape the castle with her.  Shadow of the Colossus isn’t that different as you control a young man who is trying to restore life to a girl named Mono. In order to do this, he needs to find and kill 16 colossi that are roaming the land.

The games are special because they do many things so well. The stories (while straightforward) are well told, and you really form an emotional bond with the characters. The gameplay is also very unique with each game, and I have yet to hear one person call these games anything but an amazing experience. Its definitely worth the price of admission for this one.

God of War: Origins collections

Release: September 13

Price: $39.99

Includes: GoW:Chains of Olympus & GoW: Ghost of Sparta

This is an interesting one, as it’s actually two PSP games remastered in HD for the PS3. The games featured are GoW: Chains of Olympus and GoW: Ghost of Sparta.

Both video games are prequels and sequels in the series. Chains of Olympus comes before God of War and is essentially episode 0. Ghost of Sparta on the other hand came inbetween God of War 1 and 2. Both games fill in a lot of backstory for Kratos, and help make more sense of the story told in God of War 1-3.

This would be essential for any fan of the GoW series. On top of this and HD rendering, there will also be trophies added as well. The game also includes DLC in the form of Director’s commentary, and DLC for Ghost of Sparta (Legionnaire Kratos and Forest of the Forgotten).

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Release: November 8

Price: $49.99

Includes: Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, & Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

This is one I’m looking forward to the most, as I’m a huge Metal Gear fan. With this collection, you’re going to get three games remastered to the PS3 for the first time.

All three titles are games focused on what series creator Hideo Kojima called “Tactical Espionage” in which the player focused on stealth and moving in silence, as opposed to wandering around and killing things. The players control one character as they are infiltrating an enemy headquarters, so calling attention to yourself is a mistake.

The Metal Gear franchise is one of the best franchises in terms of story. The twists and turns you’ll face while trying to achieve your mission are unforgettable. The characters are just as memorable. From Solid Snake to Otacon from Rosemary to The Boss, the characters in this game are some of the most well made and deep characters in video games or any media. As for the gameplay, the challenge of stealth (as well as some of the most unique boss battle I can remember playing in any game) will keep you entertained for hours.

For fans of the series, this is a no-brainer. On top of the three games; Metal Gears 2 & 3 will be the Subsistence editions. Essentially, this means that they will be the collector’s edition of both games, that comes with a ton of special features. This includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake, released originally for the MSX2 system, will be playable as well. You are now getting five games in one pack. For those who are curious, I would recommend buying the original Metal Gear Solid from PSN. If you like what you see, getting ready for a wild ride come November!
