Sony and Microsoft holding off on PS4 and new Xbox until 2014

Two separate insider sources, with ties close to first-party companies like Sony and Microsoft are stating that the media giants are planning to hold off until 2014 for their next platform releases, relying on further technological advancements and Move/Kinect support to last them into the new generation.

“Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they’re delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better,” said one insider, who works closely with first-party companies on production.

Other sources claim that Sony and Microsoft are waiting out their next console release due to financial ties and the fact the current consoles still have plenty of life left, stating there is plenty “more room in the Xbox 360 for developers to max out,” but the PS3 may last be last man standing.

“I think we’ll see a game of chicken between Sony and Microsoft,” stated M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon in a talk with Kotaku. “Sony definitely isn’t launching a successor before 2014 and could stand to benefit by having Microsoft launch first as PS3 builds in to North America and builds a strong position in Europe. Microsoft claims there’s a lot more room in Xbox 360 for developers to max out, but here PS3 could have a strong advantage.”

“I don’t think either Sony or Microsoft are interested in a new console till they can advance the technology, and they certainly don’t want to launch at a $600 price point,” added Wedbush Morgan’s marketing analyst Michael Pachter.

“It may take till 2014 to get 2TB hard drives, uber fast CPUs and state-of-the art graphics and sell at $400.”

  1. Suits me down to the ground. Still so much more that can be done. I can see both Move and Kinect offering a lot in those 3-4 years with new gaming experience.

Agreed. Between my PS3 and PC, I’m good for at least another 2-3 years. Blu-ray, 3D, and interactive motion controls will keep me occupied. Also, visuals still seem to be getting better on the consoles, despite their spec limitations in comparison to PC now days.

  3. That’s a relief.

  4. That’s a good timeline. I can still have fun with my PS360 for a few more years.

  5. Suits me just fine.

  6. No problemo. Got my PS3 a year ago and I still have heaps of games to finish, including a lot of old games like Oblivion.

  7. O_O what a retarde analisis…

  8. Well, good. Then they can really work on it, and make it awesome. I don’t want them to rush anything!
